The Nina Necklace Chronicles has to end sometime, right? After all, General Hospital first introduced Nina’s half-heart necklace in August of 2018 after her mother, Madeline, died in jail. That’s… a long time ago (when Michelle Stafford first played Nina), and for some reason, this story is still going on.
How many more times can Nina (Cynthia Watros) finger that necklace, feeling it to remind her it’s there, that she has a daughter out there? And then put it into its box and take it out once again, wondering if she should search for her missing daughter or not.
How many times can Ava (Maura West) look at it recently and not remember ever seeing Nina wearing it, touching it, looking wistfully ahead of her imagining the daughter she never met? After all, Nina and Ava are inexplicable best friends now. Yet, the necklace set off bells in Carly’s (Laura Wright) head instead.
And that introduces the other problem we have with the turn this story is taking. Why is this now Carly’s story and not Nina’s? Why does Carly once again get to decide who knows their children, raises their children, and in this case, who gets to know their grandchildren?
We can also go way far back to 2014 when the concept of Nina’s daughter first arrived on the scene with Nina herself. We quickly learned Nina slipped into a coma while pregnant and was only told she miscarried, but nobody except the people of Port Charles ever really believed it.
First, we figured Kiki (Hayley Erin) had to be her daughter cause that would just make sense since she and Ava were pregnant at the same time with the same man’s child. Then, it made little sense when Kiki was killed and we definitely saw a dead body.
Then, hey, maybe it was Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) since Willow and Nina instantly didn’t like one another. But then we saw Nelle (Chloe Lanier) had the necklace’s other half and learned that Nina’s baby was given to a couple in Florida (with the half-heart necklace) where Nelle grew up. Then, Nelle died, but we never saw Nelle’s body and we can’t even be sure Chase (Josh Swickard) identified her body as planned since seeing Willow and Michael (Chad Duell) distracted him from the task at hand.
So, okay, it’s Nelle, and Nelle is likely alive, and Nelle even has a child, giving Nina a grandchild. It all works. Except it’s gone on too long and this story has to draw to a close soon. Please. End it. And give us a payoff where Nina takes centerstage since this should be HER story after all. General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
