Lucky Spencer has certainly lived up to his name over the years on General Hospital. Lucky, the offspring of the legendary Luke and Laura, wasn’t born on screen, but we saw him when the dynamic couple returned to the show in 1993. The character originated by Jonathan Jackson, who grew up before us. Jacob Young later portrayed him from 2000 to 2003, and then by Greg Vaughan from 2003 to 2009. With Jackson’s return to GH, it’s time we looked at what Lucky was up to over the years.
Childhood on the Run
Luke (Anthony Geary) and Laura (Genie Francis) had been on the run from evil mobster Frank Smith (then Mitchell Ryan), during which time they had Lucky. After Frank’s goons caught up to them in Canada, the couple sent their son off to Port Charles for safety while they lured the minions off of his trail. Luke’s aunt Ruby (Norma Connolly) took Lucky in, and although the bad guys eventually found him, they couldn’t capture him.
Lucky found friendship with a boy named Sly (Glenn Walker Harris Jr.), who turned out to be his cousin, whose dad, Bill (Anthony Geary), was the spitting image of Lucky’s father. Unfortunately, the baddies caught up with them and killed Bill, thinking he was Luke. Lucky’s parents finally arrived in Port Charles to stay for good, and they had a little girl named Lulu. (Learn how Sly was recently mentioned on an episode.)
When Lulu needed a bone marrow transplant, Laura’s long-lost son, Nikolas (then Tyler Christopher), and his uncle Stefan (Stephen Nichols) came to the rescue. Lucky was horrified by the news that he had a brother he never knew about, and the two didn’t get along for quite some time, even being rivals for Sarah (Jennifer Sky). Lucky later found her sister, Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst), battered and bruised in the park after a horrifying rape and got her the help she needed. The two would form a bond that would last through the years even though they couldn’t always make a relationship work.
Harsh Reality
At one point during the brothers’ unrelenting feud, Nikolas informed Lucky that Luke had raped his mother many years ago. Unable to forgive his father, the boy ran off and got a room over Jason’s (Steve Burton) motorcycle shop. But when the shop eventually caught fire, Lucky was believed to have died there. It turned out that the supervillains Faison (Anders Hove) and Helena (Constance Towers) had faked Lucky’s death, kidnapped him, and brainwashed him.
A year later, Faison laid out breadcrumbs for Luke and Laura to find Lucky, which they did. Their boy seemed off, easily giving in to his anger. Helena ordered him to do all kinds of nasty things, including attempting to stab Jason, drug Luke, and poison his cousin, Lucas (then Logan O’Brien). Fortunately, Lucky used his love for Liz as a source of strength and overcame the villains’ control, freeing himself for good.
Lucky and Liz would continue to have an on-again, off-again romance over the years. During one of their off times, he hooked up with a prostitute named Summer (Brittney Powell), but she ended up getting murdered, and when the police were ineffective in solving the case, he joined the force himself in an attempt to find her justice. He was also frustrated because Jason had fathered a child named Jake with Liz, and so he had an affair with Sam (Kelly Monaco).
He battled drugs and alcohol at various points, especially when Maxie (Kirsten Storms) was getting him the narcotics. She even faked being pregnant with his child to get him to stay with her! But that didn’t last, and he was doubly shocked when he found out that Ethan (then Nathan Parson) was yet another long-lost brother, this time by Luke. Around the same time, it was revealed that Liz and Nik had an affair, which caused Lucky to again turn to alcohol. She got pregnant, and the baby, named Aiden, turned out to be Lucky’s child, but for a time, Nikolas was believed to be the father.
Aiden had been kidnapped by Franco (then James Franco), but Lucky rescued him. However, Luke seemingly killed Liz’s other child, Jake, by accidentally hitting him with his car, and everyone was devastated. Lucky and Liz were apart again, and when mobster Anthony Zacchara (Bruce Weitz) killed his then-girlfriend, Siobhan (Erin Chambers), Lucky ended up moving to Ireland to get away from the crazy drama.
Frank Smith (then Joe Cortese) resurfaced and kidnapped Lucky in 2015. But, Luke and Laura rescued him and also found Jake who was actually not dead, and returned him to Elizabeth.
Lucky’s a Lot Like Luke
Currently, a comatose Lulu (not played by anyone at the moment) is in dire need of a liver transplant. Nikolas was not a viable match, so Laura asked the WSB for help and learned that Lucky was in East Africa, working to rescue doctors in perilous predicaments. Like his father, Lucky has been battling the bad guys and helping those who need it. Now, Laura and her husband Kevin (Jon Lindstrom) are on a mission to find Lucky and bring him home so he can hopefully save Lulu’s life.
In a recent interview with TV Insider, Jackson explained, “I guess I would say, in some ways, he’s the most like Luke that he’s ever been.” Having previously been a police officer, Lucky was at odds with his dad, but now that he seems to be a good guy mercenary, he’s kicking butt and taking names. GH sorely needs a strong hero to fill Luke’s shoes, and it looks like Lucky is just what the doctor ordered.
