Soap Hub Flash Back Friday: Cynthia Watros Recalls Sonny’s Proposal to Nina

General Hospital characters Nina Reeves, played by Cynthia Watros, and Sonny Corinthos, played by Maurice Benard, have come a long way since they met in Nixon Falls. Some may have thought the mobster would never settle down with the magazine editor, but now, they’re engaged to be married. Watros recalls the emotional moment from last May with Soap Hub for this week’s Flashback Friday.

Cynthia Watros: (Don’t) Say It With Flowers

Nina’s office at Crimson may not have been the most romantic setting for Sonny to propose to Nina, but the scenes stood out as romantic, touching, and heartfelt, thanks to terrific acting, writing, and directing. Who needs flowers, violins, candles, and a private rooftop dinner (though those are all certainly nice!) when you have a man professing his love for the special woman in his life?

How Sonny Brings the Romance

“Maurice was amazing in those scenes,” Watros recalls. (Soap Hub agreed, naming Benard Performer of the Week for GH that week.) “He’s always so great. I felt that in those scenes. He has the ability to touch a very vulnerable side to him. He can do that pretty quickly. We can practice it once, tape it, and he’s right there. He’s so talented.”

Watros theorizes that her leading man can play romantic and vulnerable due in no small part to his relationship with his real-life wife, Paula. “I could be wrong; you’d have to ask Maurice,” Watros offers, “but I felt in [those proposal scenes] it could have been Maurice talking to his wife. They have such a beautiful relationship. I think he’s able to tap into his real relationship and convey that on-screen.”

Cynthia Watros: Sonita Forever

Sonny produced a beautiful engagement ring, but the locale — Nina’s office — didn’t lend itself to any other bells and whistles. “Sonny even had a line where he said that he could have gotten flowers, and Nina said she didn’t need them,” Watros recollects. The future is unknown. Sonny and Nina could make it to the altar and go the distance — or not. “I’d love for them to stay on-screen together forever,” Watros muses. “I don’t see their connection ending. It would have to be something really special to break that bond.”

How You Can Meet Watros, Benard, and Other GH Actors
