Port Charles lost another prominent LGBTQIA+ character when Blaze was sent packing, but General Hospital may have found a small way to make up for it on the August 19, 2024 episode.
How It Started
It was only less than a decade ago that Port Charles’ LGBTQIA+ community was thriving. There was Kristina (then-Lexi Ainsworth) navigating her sexuality and planning her LGBT youth center, while a young Aiden (then-Jason David) chose to be himself in a school full of bullies, and eventually came out by revealing his crush on a classmate named Tobias.
Lucas (Ryan Carnes) and Brad (Parry Shen, who returned to GH this week) were once happily married with a baby on the way, though their relationship went up in flames after Brad’s deception was revealed and Lucas learned their son was actually Michael’s (Chad Duell) child with Nelle (ex-Chloe Lanier). Terry (Cassandra James) had budding relationships with Chet (ex-Christopher Van Etten) and Yuri (Cyrus Hobbi) and made strides as a transgender woman, while Felix (ex-Marc Anthony Samuel) has always floated in and out of GH at the right times.
How It’s Going
Now, the queer representation in Port Charles is lacking, to say the least. The last remaining front burner storyline was Kristina and Blaze (Jacqueline Grace Lopez, who recently said goodbye to GH), and not only did Kristina hit pause on her youth center, but also ended things with her girlfriend, who was just learning how to be an out and proud gay woman after staying closeted for years.
However, things may be looking up after the August 19 episode when two characters who haven’t been seen in months showed up on screen. GH gave us a two-for-one when Brad timidly knocked on Terry’s door, hoping to score a job at GH again. Could this be the soap’s way of keeping its queer characters at the forefront after Blaze’s departure?
