John J. York, beloved as Mac Scorpio on General Hospital, recently revealed he’s battling cancer and is in search of a bone marrow transplant. Now, the actor has shared a big update.
York appeared on Good Morning America to give folks a status update on his health challenge.
“I believe they found a match,” York shared in an interview with GMA, the ABC morning news show. The actor shared earlier this month that he was in search of a bone marrow donor to help him beat Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). York hastened to add that the potential match is believed to be a “perfect” match. “Don’t make me cry,” he said.
York’s real-life drama mirrors a storyline from GH in which Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) needed a bone marrow transplant. She received one from her aunt Leisl (Kathleen Gati). Now, it looks like York has found one, too.
“So we’re going to our testing and do all that kind of stuff here coming up in here about a week,” York added. “I believe the transplant will happen — fingers crossed — in November.” The actor says it’s a “big deal” to find someone who is a perfect match. He shared that many of his family members were tested to be donors, and many of them matched 6 out of 12 markers.
Asked what he would say to the donor who got tested and matched him, York replied, “I don’t know…’ Thank you for saving my life. For letting me spend more time with my wife, daughter, son-in-law, [and] grandchildren…seeing this beautiful sky and these beautiful trees.’ That’s what I would say.”
There’s a web page, Be the Match/Match for Mac, where people can learn more about York and also how to register to become a potential donor. “The response has been overwhelming for me,” the GH fan favorite says. “If there’s anyone out there who may want to be a donor…what a wonderful thing to be able to save someone’s life.”
The GMA segment shares that York taped this most recent interview from the ABC studios in Hollywood, where he’s continuing to tape scenes as Mac. Soap Hub wishes York more good news and a successful bone marrow transplant. We will keep you updated as the actor shares his progress.
