General Hospital has hired a new head writing team, Patrick Mulcahey and Elizabeth Korte, to steer the soap into an exciting new future. As they take on the enormous task, here are seven moves they need to take, including a few suggestions for Jason Morgan’s return.
Here’s What New Writers Should Do
1. Let’s rectify all the career swaps the previous head writing regime made in the name of “storytelling.” Have Carly (Laura Wright) return to her post as co-owner of the Metro Court, and let Nina (Cynthia Watros) take back the reins at Crimson. Figure out a way for the disbarred Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) to apply for reinstatement sooner than the five-year waiting period, so she can practice law again. After Curtis (Donnell Turner) gets back on his feet, have him sell The Savoy (or let Marshall run the place) and return to his more exciting PI work.
2. In addition to swapping characters’ jobs, the old writing team made a practice of splitting up popular established couples to create new ones. While Chase (Josh Swickard) and Brook Lynn (Amanda Setton) have been a success, others shouldn’t have been messed with. It turns out that the timing is perfect to reunite Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Carly, and Nina and Valentin (James Patrick Stuart). So let’s start with that.
3. When Trina (Tabyana Ali) found out Curtis was her biological father, she swore it wouldn’t change the bond she had with Taggert (Réal Andrews), the “dad” who raised her. However, there’s been no mention or sighting of him in months. He and Trina didn’t spend a moment together on Thanksgiving or Christmas, nor was Taggert invited to her goodbye party before she left for Paris. It’s time to reinstate that relationship. Maybe he can console her over losing Spencer (Nicholas Alexander Chavez).
4. Lulu (Emme Rylan) has been in a coma for three years, leaving Charlotte and Rocco motherless, and Laura (Genie Francis) without her only daughter. It’s time the fiery character finally regains consciousness and reclaims her life. With Spencer and Nikolas (Adam Huss) off the canvas, the move would give Laura a cause to focus on as she guides her daughter down the recovery road.
5. Lulu’s awakening would also coincide perfectly with Steve Burton’s comeback as Jason. It would be the perfect one-two punch to Sam (Kelly Monaco) and Dante’s (Dominic Zamprogna) steady, but staid relationship. As to where Jason Morgan has been since that tunnel collapse on Cassadine Island, a myriad of things are possible – a rival crime family has brainwashed him into to doing their bidding, someone nefarious (Cyrus Renault?) has been holding him captive, he’s been suffering from amnesia…or something else.
6. Don’t let Rena Sofer or Jane Elliot go – anywhere. Their returns as Lois and Tracy, respectively, have made the House of Quartermaine must-watch TV. Find a way to keep them front and center in a story or, at least on the canvas in some way.
7. Lastly, how about a misdiagnosis for Gregory (Gregory Harrison)? Do fans really want to see anyone endure the horrible deterioration associated with ALS or witness his family go through the pain and heartache of watching it? Viewers already braved the tear-jerking death of Sonny’s father, Mike (Max Gail) to Alzheimer’s. Having Gregory miraculously spared at the last minute would be tremendously uplifting. Perhaps Finn (Michael Easton) could be instrumental in diagnosing the medical mistake and save his father, much like another Finn, The Bold and the Beautiful’s Tanner Novlan, who recently brought Eric Forrester (John McCook, who was moved by fan reactions.) back from the brink of death.
