General Hospital has confirmed a new co-head writer. In May, the ABC daytime drama confirmed that Patrick Mulcahey, who began writing with co-head writer Elizabeth Korte, was out.
Soap Opera Digest reported that Chris Van Etten returns to the show as Korte’s new co-head writer. Material penned by Mulcahey and Korte aired into the summer. The new associate head writer is Cathy LePard. She’d previously served as GH’s Script and Breakdown Writer. The new writing team’s first episode airs today, Thursday, August 8th.
Executive Producer Frank Valentini told SOD, “No one knows General Hospital and its history more than Elizabeth and Chris. Cathy joined the show in 2023, and her talent and love for the genre has been a tremendous asset to this team. We look forward to this dynamic writing combination continuing the legacy of the show and giving our fans much to look forward to.”
Both Van Etten and Korte have held this position at GH before. Van Etten served as the show’s co-head writer in 2017 alongside Dan O’Connor until they were let go in January. Korte started writing for GH in 1994 and served as co-head writer starting in 2001 until she became a script editor in 2008. In 2007, Korte also served as co-head writer of the GH spinoff GH: Night Shift alongside Robert Guza, Jr. (who was recently tapped to work on The Gates).
In June, GH won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Writing Team for a Daytime Drama series.
Recently, viewers have noticed that several front-burner storylines quickly wrapped up in Port Charles. It will be interesting to see how this writing change affects things moving forward. What do you hope to see happen on the soap opera in the coming weeks? Let us know in the comments below.
