It’s a sad time for General Hospital fans. In the aftermath of Sam’s death, Dante will need to reassess his life moving forward, especially for their son Rocco. Dominic Zamprogna opened up about his character’s final moments with Sam and his relationship with Kelly Monaco.

Last Scenes Together Were Goodbyes

Zamprogna recently told Soap Opera Digest that after long days working closely with the cast and crew, they became like family. When his character Dante was paired with Monaco’s Sam, the two became close friends off-screen. Within that closeness, he remarked that he “Got to know Kelly in a way that I’d never known her before. And she’s a remarkable person. She’s tough as nails and admirable in so many ways, and it’s been cool to become a friend of hers.” (Find out what Monaco said about her exit.)

He explained that their off-screen friendship would continue even though she exited the show. Calling her “amazing,” he further explained, “My monologues were her last scenes, so we finished those scenes, and I basically said goodbye to Kelly then and there.” Dante would later open up to his dad, Sonny (Maurice Benard), who gave him good advice about staying strong for their kids and that his family would always be there to support him.

Anything Is Possible

Zamprogna couldn’t stop gushing about how wonderful Monaco was. He noted that as the two got to know each other in real life, they would open up about their personal lives. It was something he never expected because she seemed so tough externally. But as he peeled away the layers and got to know the real Monaco, he explained, “I just loved getting to know her, understanding who she really was, because she’s deep and complex.”

He stated that he learned sometimes people can get complacent if things are going smoothly, but he tried to instill in her the notion that just because this door closed doesn’t mean it’s the end. While he didn’t come out and say she would eventually return to the show, he also didn’t rule it out because being in the soap opera world means that anything is possible.
