Drew Cain and Carly Spencer are just getting started as a romantic duo on General Hospital. However, Drew’s portrayer, Cameron Mathison, is kicking romance into high gear in the holiday movie, “A Merry Christmas Wish,” in which he stars along with Jill Wagner. The fan-favorite chatted with Soap Hub about his new film and a new venture!
The GAC (AKA Great American Family) movie tells the story of Janie (Jill Wagner), a rising marketing executive from Manhattan, who returns to her hometown of Woodland Falls after her great-uncle Randall dies. Janie sets out to honor Randall’s request that the town’s annual Winter Wonderland festival takes place. She gets help from childhood pal Dylan (Cameron Mathison), who steps up to host the event in the farm’s barn. Does Janie’s boyfriend, who pressures her to return to New York, stand a chance against Dylan? (We kind of doubt it!)
“It’s such a fun story,” Mathison tells Soap Hub. “There’s a really fun dynamic between [Jill and me]. We had a blast filming this. We hit it off, and I think we’ll be doing more movies together.”
While it’s unclear if Drew and Carly will live happily ever after (she is keeping a secret from him that Nina Reeves, [Cynthia Watros], is indeed Willow’s [Katelyn MacMullen] mother), it’s traditional that lovebirds in feel-good holiday movies like “A Merry Christmas Wish” end up making beautiful music together.
“In many ways, I think viewers get out of these movies what they get from watching GH — an escape,” Mathison offers. “An amazing escape from their own lives. [GH] is more unpredictable than movies like ‘A Merry Christmas Wish.’ You can go to GH if you want drama, mystery, action, and love and romance, and when you want love and romance and [an all-but guaranteed] happy ending with a positive message, you go to holiday movies.”
Mathison’s doing more than making movies with GAC. He’s taking part in the channel’s app GAcommunity, a free streaming app. GAcommunity features short-form original series hosted by well-known experts at the top of their fields, including cooking, fashion, lifestyle, gardening, pets, parenting, DIY, relationships, philanthropy, fitness, and devotions, among others.
“These are simple things we can do to increase happiness, vitality, and energy and [increase our] passion for living,” enthuses Mathison. “I share ideas, partially to give a little insight into my life and partially, also, to give people some takeaways. It’s a community, so there’s a lot of back and forth.”
The variety of topics included in the GAcommunity app is vast. “You can take away a bit of everything,” Mathison says. “You might go there for a recipe for Christmas cookies, but you come away with learning about the benefits of getting outside and spending time in nature.”
A Merry Christmas Wish airs on Saturday, November 12, at 8 p.m. on GAC. Check your cable listings to see if you carry GAC on your lineup!
