Though it has been some time since Robin was last a visitor to Port Charles, the fictional hamlet at the center of ABC’s General Hospital, the talented actress and director who first brought the character to life over 35 years ago is still just as busy as ever – and in the midst of celebrating a very special milestone.
That’s because she was born on March 5, 1978, in Bellflower, California, which means that this talented multi-hyphen is turning 45 years old today! McCullough made her on-screen debut at the tender age of 7-months in a diaper commercial co-starring future Passions star Juliet Mills.
In 1984, McCullough landed a small part in the breakdancing film Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo. She attempted to follow that up with a guest spot on Webster but failed to pass the audition process.
Instead, she read for the role of Robin Scorpio, the soon-to-be-introduced daughter of General Hospital characters Robert Scorpio (Tristan Rogers) and Anna Devane (Finola Hughes). A further 11 readings were necessary before GH producers handed her the job.
McCullough first appeared on the venerable ABC soap in the fall of 1985. The part would eventually net her the 1989 Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Juvenile Female and the 1995 statuette for Outstanding Younger Actress. The latter award was for her incredible work in a storyline that saw Robin diagnosed with HIV.
In 1996, McCullough briefly retired in order to attend college and her return in 1998 proved short-lived. Instead, she accepted a number of offers to appear on primetime programs. Among the many were Undressed, Once and Again (on which she had a recurring role opposite Evan Rachel Wood), DAG, ER, and Judging Amy. She also appeared in the 2002 feature Legally Blonde.
After brief GH reprisals, McCullough returned for a more substantial stint between October 2005 and March 2012. Since July of that year, she had made numerous returns in a guest compacity.
In the interim, she began a career as a director, and since 2013 she has helmed episodes of series such as Shake It Up, KC Undercover, Pretty Little Liars, Fuller House, One Day at a Time, The Conners, The Bold Type, Carol’s Second Act, High School Musical: The Musical, Fantasy Island, With Love, and How I Met Your Father.
McCullough’s other acting credits include Purple People Eater, Bugsy, and Consenting Adults (all films) and episodes of All My Children (as Robin), The Shield, Crossing Jordan, and CSI.
