As evidenced by the beautiful music montage in today’s General Hospital episode, Trina and Spencer share an epic love story. Artist Austin Jay, who composed and performed “Things You’ll Never Know,” talked to Soap Hub exclusively about how his tune came to be used for the Sprina love montage.
Jay’s not just a longtime GH viewer but his aunt, Charlotte Gibson, is one of the show’s scribes. When the story called for Trina (Tabyana Ali) to yearn for Spencer’s (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) safe return, Gibson thought her nephew’s tune would complement the tale.
“Paul [Glass, Supervising Music Producer, GH] and people at ABC thought [the song] was a perfect fit in terms of the water and the song. I got the call and I was so happy because I’ve had so many happy memories of watching the show,” he recalls.
Jay not only performed “Things You’ll Never Know” but he also wrote and played the music for it. “That song came 100% straight from…from my heart,” Jay says. “I wrote [“Things You’ll Never Know”] in the middle of lockdown during the pandemic. I was feeling very alone and isolated. I’d been writing more fast-paced songs. I wanted to write a ballad, something about being without somebody.”
“Being without somebody” is certainly how Trina is feeling right now. Spencer has seemingly met his end as he attempted to save Trina’s life from evil Esme (Avery Kristen Pohl). “I was thinking about the part in Titanic where Rose [Kate Winslet] was calling for the boats to come back. That feeling of hopelessness. You’re going to keep trying but it’s just not there. I know that sounds very depressing but that’s what I was going with. That sad feeling of yearning. There’s good in the feelings you have, but you won’t be able to be with that person.”

I’m grateful that I’m starting to perform more. I’m going on a lot of tours throughout this year and will be performing a lot. I’m very grateful that people love my live shows. People say my songs are [cathartic]. I’m excited and so ready. I’m very thankful for this opportunity and for new people to hear this song.”
