As a newcomer to General Hospital, Giovanni Mazza took the time to get to know his scene partner, Tabyana Ali, before they actually shot anything.

Mazza Had Great Foresight

The GH set-up is nearly perfect: Spencer (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) is presumed dead, leaving his girlfriend Trina (Tabyana Ali) to mourn him. But then a newcomer to town, Gio (Giovanni Mazza), inadvertently makes her stumble and fumble whenever she sees him. His initial, at-a-glance resemblance to Spencer is just on the surface but enough to have caught her eye. While there’s no word on whether or not Chavez will reprise his role (except perhaps a clue) and bring Spencer back from the dead any time soon, creating this budding romance is a great lead-in, should he eventually return, and the drama that would ensue is textbook soap opera.

However, that’s all speculation, and Mazza has made an incredible first impression with the fans and with Ali herself. He explained to Soap Opera Digest that before filming his first few scenes, he made a point of getting together with Ali to develop a rapport. “The weekend before I started filming with her, I reached out to her,” he stated, adding, “Because I had watched the show [over the course of his audition process], I knew who Trina was, and that Tabyana, obviously, played her…. I asked her if she wanted to hang out. She said, ‘Yeah!’ And so we planned to just get coffee, and that would be it.” (Find out how Mazza’s uncle inspired him to become an actor.)

Their Time Together Was Longer Than They Anticipated

Ali found that she needed some in-person time with Mazza during their discussion. The actors decided to hang out at the mall together for several hours, which helped them develop a stronger rapport when they filmed their scenes.

What started out as a simple meet-and-greet became something more complex as the actors discovered their own natural chemistry. “We ended up spending like six hours together, and we just clicked,” he said. “When I was actually on set working with her, it just felt like I had known her my whole life, almost!”

We’re glad to be able to see him regularly, and considering Trina has moved into the Quartermaine mansion — in close proximity to Gio, who also lives there — the potential for a romantic connection is all but assured!
