Brook Lynn Quartermaine wasn’t gone all that long on General Hospital, but viewers are happy to know that she and her portrayer, Amanda Setton, are back onscreen today! Soap Hub chatted with Setton about her return and so much more.
Amanda Setton Talks Brook Lynn’s Return
Soap Hub spoke with Setton about the dynamics she has gotten to play out in recent months with baby Bailey (AKA baby Louise) drama and working with co-stars Kirsten Storms (Maxie Jones), Wally Kurth (Ned Quartermaine), Jane Elliot (Tracy Quartermaine), and Josh Swickard (Harrison Chase).
Soap Hub: Why did Brook Lynn leave Port Charles?
Amanda Setton: I think the loss of Bailey devastated Brook Lynn in a way that she didn’t expect. Her ‘m.o.’ is to run. She got out of Dodge, out of Port Charles, and anything that would trigger her. Bailey was in her world for most of the last year. Leaving her hit Brook Lynn hard. She’s coming back to Port Charles now because it’s where she belongs.
Soap Hub: Brook Lynn and Maxie weren’t always pals but their love for baby Bailey Louise brought them together. You have been so vulnerable in this storyline.
Amanda Setton: Thank you. I have absolutely loved this storyline as difficult as it’s been to play on an emotional level. There were times when it really was hard to get to that emotional level. It’s been a privilege to work with Kirsten. She’s a dear friend, an amazing actor, and a pro. We were able to be like Laverne & Shirley in some of the comedy scenes they wrote for us. And we also played loss, grief, and fear. It was also such a pleasure to work more with Wally and Josh. Three of my favorite people. A joy.
Soap Hub: Chase and Brook Lynn’s relationship deepened after he stepped up and took part in the conspiracy to protect Bailey Louise.
Amanda Setton: I think the friendship and ultimately sort of falling for each other surprised both of them. It started out that nobody saw coming with all the arrests in the beginning of their relationship. He was then with Willow [Tait, Katelyn MacMullen]. She was sticking up for Michael [Corinthos Quartermaine, Chad Duell]. I think what’s happened between Chase and Brook Lynn surprised both of them that they’ve fallen for each other. I think that’s why Brook Lynn isn’t giving in to her feelings. She can’t fall for Chase — they’re friends! I do love working with Josh. He’s such an amazing actor, so present, so specific, and so there with you. There were these pauses and beats in our scenes and they were really rich and fun to watch.
Soap Hub: How did you feel about being called Mama Brook Lynn? What did that mean to your character?
Amanda Setton: Ned and Chase had been singing Brook Lynn’s praises for helping Maxie but I think the first time that she felt it herself was when Maxie said ‘Mama Brook Lynn.’ It was like it was the first time Brook Lynn felt it herself. Maxie really saw what she had done. Brook Lynn felt seen.
Soap Hub: What’s it like working with Jane Elliot — she’s a force of nature!
Amanda Setton: It’s such a joy and pleasure to work with Jane. She’s what you said — a force of nature. Her presence walks into the room before her, and I mean that in the most complimentary way. I want to be as present as I can be, so I am able to play anything she gives me. Working with her is a joy. Brook Lynn and Tracy don’t really like each other. But there’s a comfort in that in a way. Who did Brook Lynn go to when she needed a baby? There’s a trust there as much as they push each other’s buttons. Tracy is still Brook Lynn’s ‘Granny.’ You can see how in some ways they’re similar.
