GH’s Adam Huss Visits The Dark Side In His New Film

While General Hospital’s Nikolas cools his heels in prison, his portrayer, Adam Huss, is busy making other films and TV shows. The actor took some time to discuss his upcoming projects, including a scary new thriller.

Next Level Evil

Adam Huss had some pretty big shoes to fill, considering the late Tyler Christopher, then Marcus Coloma, played Nikolas on GH as a guy who often tapped into his dark side, sometimes going further than he meant to. Nik’s misdeeds finally caught up with him, and he’s now in Pentonville prison. But as his mother, Laura (Genie Francis), always knew, there was a spark of redemption in him that has yet to be explored. Not so for Huss’ new film character. (Learn more about Nikolas’ prison stint.)

Recently, Huss sat down with Soap Opera Digest to discuss his starring role in the new horror film Peek-A-Boo, which revolves around a nanny who’s watching a baby while its adoptive parents are away and has an unexpected encounter with the child’s biological father, Jacob Stanton (Huss). The nanny and her friend must attempt to protect the child from Jacob’s violent, evil ways.

Huss compared his new film character to his soapy one, stating, “Just like Nikolas on GH, [he] has a dark side. But that’s where the similarities between Nikolas and Jacob end. This guy’s dark side is incomparable.” With no conscience and no regard for whoever gets in his way, Stanton is truly evil. “There is no ounce of vulnerability in this guy. If you compare it to, say, the darkness in Nikolas, Nikolas’s vulnerability is his family. [With] this guy, there is no vulnerability,” he said, adding the chilling note that, “Whether it’s his girlfriend or the child, it does not matter. He just wants that leverage, and he’ll stop at nothing to get it.”

Jacob learned that his girlfriend had given their child up for adoption, and while you would think he simply wants the child back at all costs, that’s not the case. “It’s not about the love for his child. It’s just possession,” he explained, further adding that his character’s general motivation is greed. “He wants to leverage [the baby] for money. Because this couple paid so much money to adopt the child, he knows there’s more money to be had.”

Inner Villain

Noting that everyone has the ability to be angry every so often, Huss explained that he had to reach deep into the darkest depths of his mind to portray the evildoer, and while he found the concept to be frightening, he really enjoyed the process. “I don’t have to think about what I’m saying or what I’m doing or apologizing for it. It was like I could be unabashedly as evil as I want.” Huss has shown us his dark side on GH, as Nikolas has often spoken to Ava (Maura West) through deeply angry, gritted teeth, to great effect.

He also praised the director, Candice Cain, who knows the characters in her films inside and out. “She just gave me these beautiful little insights and direction. It really helped lead me to that place.” Huss remarked that in the real world, he’s something of a sensitive soul that has learned to stop trying to please others, and become affable with people. The talented actor was able to unleash his inner monster for the film, remarking, “With Jacob, I just let that darkness really thrive. I let go of anything that I have that holds me back from anger or darkness. I just leaned into it.”
