General Hospital star Nancy Lee Grahn celebrated her birthday with a drive-by parade on Tuesday evening and live-streamed the event on social media as fans saw a cavalcade of soap stars in their cars ready to send good wishes, including Maura West and Genie Francis.
When Francis arrived outside Grahn’s house she quickly asked, “When do you think we’ll go back?” — meaning back to work and start making new episodes of GH.
“Frank has no answers,” Grahn told her, but she did speculate that it could be the Monday after July 4, adding that the show would have to put actors on some sort of honor system, meaning they don’t go into places like stores so they can be protected as possible.
She said she thinks the virus should be written into the show but doesn’t think it will be because people want an escape.
Francis and Grahn both admitted how much they miss each other and everyone else they work with, with Grahn saying, “I’m getting emotional here, first that you all did this for me, and second, we haven’t been together at all and I didn’t realize that I missed you guys so much.
“And I mean that in a very nice way… just seeing the faces,” she added. Of course, Francis said she missed everyone too.
General Hospital shut down production on March 13 when the dangers of the coronavirus became clear to the nation. The show is still airing new episodes, but it’s clear many were re-edited to add flashbacks to make all-new offerings last longer. On Fridays, ABC has been airing encore episodes.
The Australian soap, Neighbours, laid out a list of production changes that enable social distancing that can be a blueprint for U.S. soaps. General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
