Michael Easton has played enough characters across Port Charles and General Hospital to fill out his own family tree: Caleb Morley, John McBain, Silas Clay, and Hamilton Finn. But the role that arguably changed everything nearly sent him running in the opposite direction. Looking back on Caleb’s debut in Port Charles‘ famous “Tainted Love” storyline, Easton recently revealed that his first instinct wasn’t excitement. It was finding the nearest exit.
Key Takeaways
- Michael Easton nearly bolted after learning Caleb was a vampire.
- Port Charles kept Caleb’s storyline secret until after Easton signed his contract.
- Easton created distinct personalities for Father Michael and Caleb through their speech patterns.
- Easton and Kelly Monaco never had a chemistry test before being paired as Caleb and Livvie.
- Easton believes Caleb and Livvie’s romance worked because the characters were “against the world” and willing to die for each other.
The Meeting That Nearly Ended Before It Began
Easton told Swooon that when Port Charles first called, he didn’t even know what role he was being hired to play. The storyline was being kept under wraps, and he wouldn’t learn any details until after he signed his contract. It’s a soap opera. How weird could it possibly be?
Then came the meeting. Easton walked in expecting to hear he was playing a doctor, a lawyer, or maybe a cop. Instead, the producers explained that his character was a twin. One brother was a priest. The other was a vampire. Eventually, viewers would discover they were the same person.
At that point, Easton admitted, “my first reaction, to be honest, was to excuse myself, say I was going to the bathroom and make a run for the parking lot.” He added, “This was, in my mind, so ambitious for any show, let alone a soap. I had immediate doubts about my own ability to even play the part.” As he listened, though, something changed. The writers believed in it. Executive producer Julie Carruthers believed in it. Before long, Easton found himself believing in it, too.

Caleb and Livvie Against the World
Once he signed on, Easton had to figure out how to make Father Michael and Caleb feel like two completely different people. As he explained, “there was softness to Father Michael’s voice, and he was a ‘listener,’ so he always waited for people to stop talking before he spoke.” Caleb operated very differently. “Time was always hanging over Caleb — the sun was rising, the sun was setting — so he couldn’t wait for people to finish and would often talk over them.” It was a simple distinction that helped separate the two sides of the character.
But the bigger surprise came when Caleb met Livvie (Kelly Monaco). Easton laughed, remembering that he and Monaco never even had a chemistry test. “Poor Kelly was just stuck with me,” he joked. After being introduced, Easton recalled he was told, “Now put your fangs in and go roll around on those silk sheets together.” Somehow it worked.
Easton said there was trust between them from the very beginning. “I just remember always feeling safe with Kelly,” he explained. “There was something unspoken from the very first scene. We trusted each other.” That trust became the foundation of a love story fans still talk about more than two decades later.
