Carly has dealt with mob wars, kidnappings, and enough emotionally compromised men to qualify for hazard pay, but Valentin may finally be testing her patience in entirely new ways on General Hospital. Just as their romance started turning into something real, Valentin announced he wanted to fly to France and break Anna out of a maximum-security psychiatric facility. Now, Laura Wright opens up about Carly’s frustration and why Anna still hangs over this relationship even from another continent.

Key Takeaways

  • Laura Wright said Carly is frustrated by Valentin’s plan to rescue Anna.
  • Carly questions whether Valentin is still in love with Anna.
  • Valentin’s emotional attachment to Anna continues affecting his relationship with Carly.
  • Wright teased that Carly and Valentin’s conflict over Anna gets addressed emotionally.
  • Anna still dominates the relationship despite being offscreen.

Carly Knows Anna Is Still Between Them

Wright spoke to Soap Opera Digest about Valentin’s (James Patrick Stuart) decision to rescue Anna and made it very clear Carly was not exactly thrilled by the idea. “When he says, ‘I’m going to France to save Anna,’ Carly is like, ‘Are you freaking kidding me right now?!’” Wright laughed. “She’s like, ‘But what about me? What about our situation?’” Which is an extremely reasonable reaction when your fugitive boyfriend suddenly announces he’s leaving the country to save his ex from a psychiatric prison.

The problem for Carly is that Anna never actually left this relationship emotionally. Valentin keeps calling France for updates. He keeps worrying about what happened to her. Carly has watched him carry that guilt and attachment the entire time they’ve been together, even while the two of them were sneaking around her house playing hide-the-international-fugitive in the attic.

That tension exploded during the May 20 episode when Carly directly accused Valentin of still being in love with Anna. Before he could answer, Charlotte (Bluesy Burke) and Danny (Asher Antonyzyn) burst in with their Wyndemere news.

But Wright confirmed the issue doesn’t disappear. She teased that the question “comes back around and does get completely addressed — very emotionally.”

Anna’s Presence Still Drives the Story

What makes the whole triangle fascinating is that Anna is barely even part of the day-to-day story right now, yet she still dominates the emotional atmosphere around Valentin. Wright actually sounded impressed by how well the show pulled that off. She was amused by the idea of a love triangle without Anna present.

Wright also credited Hughes and the history between Anna and Valentin for making the dynamic work so well. She chalked it all up to Hughes’ star power, adding that that power translates into the characters being able to “have an emotional love triangle without her even being on the canvas.”

And honestly, Carly knows she is competing with something much larger than chemistry. Valentin doesn’t just feel guilty about Anna. He still feels responsible for her. The second he learned she had been transferred after another escape attempt, his priorities shifted immediately.

Carly saw it happen in real time. One minute, they were trying to figure out how to stop the bad guys. Next, Valentin was ready to sprint across Europe.
