Maurice Benard left Mike’s casual duds behind in Nixon Falls when he returned to playing sharply dressed Sonny back in Port Charles on General Hospital. But do clothes fully make the man? Is it possible that there’s a part of “Mike” still living in Sonny?
Maurice Benard Talks About Mike And Sonny
Recently, Maurice Benard did a GH Fantasy Events Zoom chat with fans where he talked about his two TV alter-egos. While he didn’t play a traditional twin dual role (ala David Canary doing both Adam and Stuart on All My Children), many feel that Mike is a separate character — one who is missed!
“People want me to bring a little bit of Mike [to] Sonny,” Benard shared with GH Fantasy Event attendees. “I’m not sure that I’m consciously doing that. It’s happening, naturally. If you see Sonny laughing a little bit more, that’s what I was doing with Mike.”
Enjoy The Journey
The whole journey has given Benard new avenues to explore. “Even as an actor, I’m thinking a lot more,” he says. “I don’t know. There’s a lot of stuff going on but it’s an interesting [story to play] as an actor.”
Time will tell how permanent any traces of Mike emerge more fully in Sonny’s persona. The actor says the best part of being back in Port Charles is that he gets to interact with two of his favorite co-stars. “I get to work now with Laura [Wright, Carly] and Cynthia [Watros, Nina],” he says with a smile. “Those are two such great actors but [they’re] different actors and it’s fun to play. I love it.”
