So Drew Cain actually didn’t die in that General Hospital plane crash orchestrated by Peter August. After two long years, the character is on his way back to Port Charles, and All My Children vet Cameron Mathison will be playing him.
What does that mean for Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco), Jason Morgan (Steve Burton), and the rest of the Quartermaine clan? In short, Drew’s return will shake up General Hospital.
First of all, Drew’s got a lot to learn and process about what’s gone on since he vanished in 2019. His childhood friend, Franco Baldwin (Roger Howarth), was murdered by the same man who tried to do him in — Peter. His former pal Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) is “dead.” His ex — the mother of his late son, Oscar — Kim Nero (Tamara Braun), has split town, and Sam has called it quits with his brother Jason to name a few. Poor Drew will have to come to terms with all of the above.
Drew might feel compelled to step back into Elizabeth Webber Baldwin’s (Rebecca Herbst) life, now that she’s a widow raising three boys alone. It’s the least he could do for Franco, the friend who shielded him from abuse as a child. Drew and Elizabeth also share a past, having been lovers when he first surfaced in PC. The re-pairing would toss a monkey wrench into Elizabeth’s blossoming relationship with Finn (Michael Easton) and certainly put a damper on the new friendship she’s forged with former nemesis Sam.
Learning Sam is finally free, Drew could make a serious play for his ex-wife. He loved her deeply long ago on General Hospital but stepped away realizing Jason would always be first and foremost in her heart. However, Sam might not be so eager to rekindle things with Drew. Her life’s finally settled, and she seems on the verge of exploring things with Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna). If she is drawn back to Drew, it would put a kibosh on whatever comes next with Dante. And it could definitely impact her amicable split with Jason, and reignite the tension between him and Drew.
Drew and Jason had made peace before he vanished; Drew’s late son, Oscar, imploring the pair to come together as brothers. Since Drew’s been gone, Jason has stepped up as a father figure to Scout, the daughter Drew shares with Sam. Will Drew be grateful or resent the fact that Scout thinks of Jason as her daddy and views him as a total stranger? Will Drew be angry that Jason chose the mob over Sam and their family? The brothers’ tenuous bond could be shattered, casting them as enemies, once again, and creating new drama for their loved ones.
With Drew back on the scene, there’s another player in the Quartermaine mix. As Alan’s son, he’ll get to cast a vote for the new CEO of ELQ, too, if he makes it back in time. Will it be for Ned Quartermaine (Wally Kurth), Michael Corinthos Quartermaine (Chad Duell), or someone else? Drew’s special relationship with Monica Quartermaine (Leslie Charleson) could totally steer him. However, perhaps he’ll be drawn to the newest family member, Austin Gatlin-Holt (Roger Howarth), and follow his lead, tossing the entire struggle for power into a frenzy.
