Katelyn MacMullen, who plays Willow Tait on General Hospital, went through every pet owner’s biggest nightmare when her beloved cat, Astro, went missing.
It was a little over a year ago when MacMullen first introduced her Instagram followers to her new kitten, with an adorable photo of her holding Astro and posting, “This little guy is keeping our hands full.”
Thankfully, with the help of her neighbors and the local fire department, Astro was found and has been returned home safe and sound. The actress recounted her ordeal in a series of Instagram stories.
“So beyond grateful to be reunited with Astro,” Katelyn MacMullen wrote. “After a long and stressful 36 hours of him missing, our neighbors helped us track him down.” The cat was trapped between two cement walls, nearly 5 feet down and unreachable.
“Poor guy was crying for us and we desperately needed help,” MacMullen said. “Our incredible neighbors and family supported us and Astro to lengths that I still can’t quite wrap my head around. The fire department came and (by all means necessary) saved Astro’s life.”
She included a happy photo with the Santa Monica Fire Department, thanking the fireman for their efforts. Another photo of Astro had a sign above him reading “Thank you Fireman of Stations 2&3 for saving my life.”
“He is doing great, so happy he is home,” MacMullen wrote, including another photo with Astro. “Also, just so moving to see our neighbors support in a situation like this. And to those people who took an extra-long look at our missing cat signs, you truly stole my heart.”
MacMullen also posted some advice for anyone who finds themselves in a similar situation in the future. “Cats, especially when they haven’t been outside before do not generally travel far,” she wrote. “They usually stay very close to where they got out. They usually hide because they’re afraid of the new sounds and other things they could come into contact with. So they could be in the same hiding place for 2-3 days before they decide to come out.”
Her advice is to leave stuff outside the door that the cat is familiar with, such as a bed, food, and water bowls—things they can smell, so they know where home is when they come back.
“When you go looking for your cat, it’s best early in the morning or at night when there isn’t a lot of activity, bring a flashlight, look under cars, etc.,” MacMullen said. We’re all glad Astro and MacMullen had this purr-fect outcome.
