In late October, General Hospital star Cameron Mathison shared the sad news of his mother Loretta’s passing. Despite that, the actor honored a commitment to emcee the Gateway for Cancer Research Gala this past weekend, with his mom still weighing heavily on his mind.

“About 15 days after my mom lost her battle with brain cancer… I knew it was going to be a tough one for me,” Mathison wrote on his Instagram page. “When Gateway heard of my mom’s passing they told me they would understand if I needed to cancel, but I knew I had to be here for this. For my mom, for my own cancer journey, and for the millions of others affected by this horrible, relentless disease.”

Mathison has been very public about his own bout with cancer. First diagnosed in 2019, the actor shared his journey on social media, updating fans about his progress as he went into remission. About a month ago, he shared that his 2-year cancer checkup came back totally clear. His doctor even told him that his kidney numbers were the best they’ve ever been.

At the gala, Mathison was happy to report more than $4 million was raised to fund innovative research to help those with cancer feel better and live longer! “So grateful to be a part of this meaningful evening with everyone,” he wrote, adding hashtags for #cancersucks and #cancerresearch.

A host of his former daytime costars including Tamara Braun (Ava, Days of our Lives; ex-Carly/Kim, GH), Alicia Minshew (ex-Kendall, AMC), and Melissa Claire Egan (Chelsea, The Young and the Restless; ex-Annie, AMC) all sent their love.

Danica McKellar, who starred opposite Mathison on the Hallmark Channel movie, Very, Very Valentine, was also wowed by his accomplishment. “Oh my goodness, I don’t know how you managed that… I’m so proud of your strength and determination to help others,” she wrote. “That’s the stuff heroes are made of, my brave friend. Your mom is so proud of you, too!”
