General Hospital fans are getting ready to welcome Tabyana Ali as the new Trina Robinson as they also are sad to say goodbye to Sydney Mikayla in the role. But one actor who knows what it’s like to step into big shoes is the actor who plays the young man in Trina’s heart — Nicholas Alexander Chavez — and he shares his unique perspective on this big GH change.
Nicholas Alexander Chavez Opens Up
The handsome actor took part recently in a General Hospital Fantasy Events Zoom, along with his onscreen father and offscreen good friend, Marcus Coloma (Nikolas Cassadine). Of course, top of many fans’ minds was the recent casting change of his onscreen love interest — Trina Robinson.
When asked if he’d met the actress who replaced Mikayla, Tabyana Ali, Chavez said, “Yes, I did. She’s wonderful. Of course, I’m sure everyone on this call has seen it all over social media just how much we’re all going to miss Sydney. She’s an incredible actress and an incredible person. It was nothing but a pleasure to have the opportunity to work with her.
“But the new actress playing Trina is also lovely,” he continued, quick to that point. “You know, that’s the wonderful thing about [casting director] Mark Teschner and [executive producer] Frank Valentini is that they pick such wonderful people.” The actor understands her challenge acutely considering he took over for previous Spencer, Nicolas Bechtel, and he addressed that with a reminder for those in attendance.
“As a recast myself — right? — I can totally sympathize with what she’s coming into this experience with because you’re trying to learn 50 years worth of soap operas,” he laughed, “and you’re trying to do it while you’re moving from an old state to a new state, you’re trying to make new friends and new co-workers.” He certainly knows firsthand how challenging it can be to be the new actor on the set.
“She has big shoes to fill in terms of yes, Sydney, but also it’s like a big job, but she’s crushing it,” he enthused. “I’ve really, really enjoyed our scenes together that we’ve shot so far, and I think that the Trina/Spencer’ Sprina’ is going to pick up right where it left off.” It’s a sure bet that GH fans, especially those who root for the Sprina pairing, can’t wait.
