Soaps are all about secrets and we can’t think of a bigger one than the one Cynthia Watros’s Nina Reeves is keeping on General Hospital. Soap Hub recently caught up with Watros to ask her why Nina’s not letting anyone know that Sonny’s alive, living as an amnesiac named Mike in Nixon Falls.
Let’s keep in mind that Nina did indeed try to share that the reports of Sonny’s (Maurice Benard) death had been greatly exaggerated when she called his ‘widow’ Carly Corinthos (Laura Wright). Of course, Carly wasn’t interested in anything Nina had to say! “She did try to do the right thing,” Watros tells Soap Hub. “She’s been hurt in the past and she has a very soft heart.”
The Daytime Emmy-winning actress says that Carly’s harsh words to Nina on the phone “really went to the center of her heart. Now, Nina’s a little bit caught up in this web that she sort of created.” And while Nina’s no Dr. Kevin Collins (Jon Lindstrom), it’s quite possible that it would be both jarring and harmful to shock “Mike” with the news that he’s really mobster Sonny Corinthos.
In fact, isn’t it conceivable that Nina’s looking out for Sonny’s long-term welfare by not informing him of his past life? “Thank you,” Watros sincerely responds to that theory. Of course, Nina hasn’t remained totally silent about Sonny being alive. She shared this news with Wiley (Erik and Theo Olson) in great detail. Umm…isn’t he about that age when children start talking? And repeating things they hear? “Children do talk,” agrees Watros, who remains mum herself on whether or not Wiley’s going to start blabbing!
GH is Watros’s third daytime drama. She made her soap opera debut in 1994 as Annie Dutton on Guiding Light and won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 1998. Her performance as Annie having a breakdown on the witness stand while being cross-examined by Ross Marler (Jerry verDorn) remains one of GL’s most memorable scenes.
“I cried so much,” Watros recalls of her Daytime Emmy victory speech that only further endeared her to daytime fans. “If I could have changed anything that night, I wish I could have been more composed.” Ironically, the actress’s actual award needs some putting back together. “I moved and her wing broke. I’ve heard that you can get it fixed? Right now, she’s a little wounded. I do think she’s a symbol of where we’ve all been the last year. I plan on getting her back to normal.”
After a successful stint in primetime (Titus; The Drew Carey Show; Lost), Watros returned to daytime as Kelly, a mother mourning her late child Sam, on The Young and the Restless in 2013.
A while back, Watros dipped in the digital show Web world with a limited series titled Cynthia Watros Gets Lost, which she did following the conclusion of the hit series Lost. “That was fun,” she says. “I had a blast doing that. I had some time off and thought how about we shoot something? I love making fun of myself. I made fun of acting and meditation — two things I love!”
She’s also loving being on GH these days. “Frank [Valentini, executive producer] does a great job,” Watros raves. “He works nonstop. He makes sure the show stays on the air.” General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
