The Cassadine family has tormented the denizens of Port Charles dating back to the early 1980s when Mikkos plotted to freeze the world and Helena began her reign of terror against Luke, Laura, and their General Hospital family. But over the years, the clan’s scare factor has seriously waned. That’s why bringing back Spencer as a conniving teenager hellbent on revenge was the perfect move. He’s the Cassadine villain the show needs.
For the plot to work, the soap had to cast someone competent in the role; an actor who could hold his own opposite the likes of Maura West (Ava Jerome), Genie Francis (Laura Collins), and Marcus Coloma (Nikolas Cassadine). He’d also have to convey a privileged upbringing and a shrewd smartness that mask his down and dirty deviousness.
After a tentative start and as his storyline has intensified, Nicholas Alexander Chavez has shown he’s got what it takes to portray the wicked and wily Spencer. His boy-next-door looks add to his charm as the suave clever villain nobody saw coming.
Helping the General Hospital story along has been Spencer’s motivation – the things that transformed him from a precocious little boy to a calculating young man. And there has been plenty of it. His father pretended to be dead for years while keeping Spencer in the dark. His future stepmother, Ava, double-crossed him after promising to testify against his arch-enemy Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart).
Both deeds pushed Spencer over the edge, fueling his revenge for payback. He’s become consumed with making Nikolas and Ava hurt like he has hurt and, if possible, even more.
An unexpected touch in Spencer’s scheming plot has been the addition of his devious girlfriend, Esme (Avery Kristen Pohl). The character hit the ground running, setting Ava’s car on fire, proving she’s got a lot of Helena in her. Together, she and Spencer have the makings of a diabolical duo; a couple who can run rampant around Port Charles as a Bonnie and Clyde of evil.
While Nikolas has always hovered between good and evil, a blended mix of his aboveboard mother Laura and his demented father Stavros Cassadine, Spencer’s totally leaning on the Cassadine side. The side where the ends justify the means and payback and revenge trump all. He’s the perfect young man to lead the next generation of Cassadines. It’s just too bad his grandmother Helena isn’t alive to witness it because he would have made the queen of mean incredibly proud.
