General Hospital’s Nancy Lee Grahn On First-Hand Experience With Alcoholism Story

Nancy Lee Grahn, who is starting her 25th year as General Hospital’s Alexis Davis, is embarking on another Daytime Emmy-worthy storyline, as her character is dealing with the mysterious death of Neil Byrne in her bed, was recently diagnosed with osteoporosis, and a trip her back to the bottle thanks to all this chaos.

After getting bashed by Neil’s (Joe Flanigan) brother at his funeral, the alcoholic lawyer ordered a double vodka at Port Charles’s The Floating Rib.

The actress is no stranger to the problems associated with alcohol, having dealt with it in both daytime storylines and her own personal life.

Grahn posted a video of GH’s Alexis and Sam (Kelly Monaco) arguing over her drinking on Twitter and shared a little about her own personal experience with alcoholism.

“I lived with this occasional belligerent drunk who happened 2b the man I loved more than any other, my dad,” the actress wrote. “Bob Grahn got sober, became an addictions counselor & saved over 100 ppl who all showed up at his funeral to sing his praise. I get how much courage it takes to stay sober.”

This is a topic that Grahn has never been shy about talking about in the past. The actress talked a lot about her father’s problem back in her Santa Barbara days playing Julia, when her on-screen love, Mason Capwell (Lane Davies), was going through a similar storyline.

Years ago, she took a break from acting to start recovery therapy in Illinois and often speaks about how she needed to undergo her own therapy to heal, even though no one would have ever known she was going through troubling feelings.

Hopefully, Alexis’s friends and family will be there for her as she battles her addiction and perhaps the storyline will even help some viewers who may be going through something similar in their lives. General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
