Surely, there wasn’t a dry eye in your house, when Nathan took his last breath on General Hospital.
The good guy cop, who was looking forward to becoming a first-time dad, had his dream shattered, when his father Faison (Anders Hove) put a bullet in his chest. Hours later, Nathan (Ryan Paevey) died at General Hospital with his sobbing pregnant wife Maxie (Kirsten Storms) by his side.
Nathan’s demise isn’t the first to evoke a river full of tears from Port Charles fans. Here’s a look back at four of the soap’s most tear-jerking deaths.
BJ Jones
In 1993, Tony’s (Brad Maule) seven-year-old daughter, BJ, was rushed to the hospital following a tragic bus accident that left her braindead. Tony and his wife Bobbie (Jacklyn Zeman) were grief-stricken, yet it didn’t prevent Tony from doing the right thing. He opted to donate his daughter’s heart to save her ailing cousin, Maxie.
After the transplant, Tony visited Maxie in the recovery room and rested his head on her chest, so he could hear BJ’s heart beating inside her.
Stone Cates
While living life on the streets, Stone (Michael Sutton) was with a woman who was hooked on drugs. By the time he was taken in by Sonny (Maurice Benard), he had contacted HIV and, later, was diagnosed with AIDS.
Sonny and Stone’s girlfriend, Robin (Kimberly McCullough), cared for him during the last months of his life, as illness ravaged his body and left him nearly blind. However, seconds before Stone succumbed to death in 2007, his eyesight miraculously returned. “Robin, I see you,” he cried out, the last words he would ever speak.
Jake Spencer
Although it turned out to be a hoax orchestrated by Helena (Constance Towers), young Jake’s “death” by a hit-and-run driver devastated his family in 2011. Making matters worse was the man driving the car that ran him down was his “grandfather” Luke (Tony Geary).
Stepdad, Lucky, blamed Luke for killing his “son,” while Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) and Jason (Steve Burton), Jake’s biological father, tried to come to terms with the horrible accident that took their child.
Morgan Corinthos
Actor Bryan Craig’s decision to leave GH afforded the soap the opportunity to script Morgan’s stunning death in 2016 – courtesy of the Jerome sisters. While Ava (Maura West) switched out Morgan’s bipolar medicine with placebos, Olivia (Tonja Lee Walker) plotted to murder her brother Julian (William deVry) by planting a bomb in his car.
The two acts collided, when Morgan, who was spinning out of control mentally, stole Julian’s car. Suddenly, it exploded, leaving Sonny, Carly (Laura Wright), and Morgan’s estranged girlfriend, Kiki (Hayley Erin), devastated by his untimely death.
