Carly Corinthos may be worried about the health of her soon-to-be born baby but actress Laura Wright certainly has a reason to celebrate.
That’s because she was born on September 11, 1970, in Washington D.C., which means that this talented performer is turning 49 years old today! Wright was raised in Clinton, MD and developed a love for acting while attending high school. She played lead roles in many of her theater groups productions including Gypsy, Our Town, and You Can’t Take It With You.
She made her television debut in 1991 but a case of over-sleeping nearly cost Wright her big showbiz break. She laid in bed a little too long on the day her acting coach planned to put a reel together to send to the LOVING casting office.
But Wright skedaddled to the studio and managed to film her piece just in time. Upon viewing her tape the half-hour ABC soap called and requested a screen test.
She was cast in the role of Allison “Ally” Rescott and first appeared on June 25. She remained with the half-hour sudser even after a major overhaul changed the series premise, setting, and title. The “sequel” program was called The City and Wright was one of only a handful of Loving stars to be retained for the new series.
When The City was canceled in 1997, Wright transitioned over to the CBS daytime drama Guiding Light where she played Cassie Layne Winslow until 2005. One year into her tenure, Wright won the Favorite New Character Award from Soap Opera Digest Award.
Just after tendering her resignation, Wright was lured over to Guiding Light’s timeslot competitor General Hospital.
There, she became the fourth actress to embody the role of Caroline “Carly” Corinthos. Her portrayal of Carly has netted Wright six Daytime Emmy nominations and she took home the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series statuette in 2011.
