It was almost painful to watch the downward spiral of mob kingpin Sonny Corinthos on General Hospital today.

At the end of yesterday’s episode, Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) held his face tenderly in her hands and from her heart told him that no one person (including him) was to blame for the death of his son Morgan.

As soon as she walked away, he decided to go after Scott Baldwin (Kin Shriner) – the latest person (after Julian) he deemed as being the one responsible for killing his son. With Sonny’s twisted logic, Scott got Julian off (wasn’t it Paul who threw the case??), and if he hadn’t needed to kill Julian, his son would still be alive.

You Gotta Have Friends
Luckily for Scott, Ava (Maura West) is apparently texting buddies with Jason (Billy Miller) and got him to come to Sonny’s side faster than a speeding bullet. Jason pulled his old friend off of Scott and got him away from the scene in typical Jason fashion. But Sonny’s response wasn’t typical of their friendship.

Sonny then decided the one responsible for Morgan’s death was his son’s namesake – Jason Morgan – because Jason would have handled the hit correctly and not gotten Sonny’s son killed. He berated him for turning on him, turning down his hit request, and then twisted the knife when he said he lost him as a friend a long time ago.

Living on the Edge
Obviously, Sonny is playing this crazy blame game, because it’s easier than looking in the mirror and facing the fact that his chosen way of life – his violent and often deadly line of business – is responsible for his son’s death. Granted, we fully expect the show to let Sonny off the hook and come up with another enemy of Julian’s to blame, but that will be a cop out.

The fact is that Sonny did order a hit on Julian and even if he did call it off in time, the intent was there. Lucky for him, the greatest mob apologist of all time – Robin (Kimberly McCullough) – is about to find him on the bridge ready to kill himself and will stop him. He probably has his “ex” friend Jason to thank for that, once again saving him from himself.

The acting from all involved has been top notch and riveting to watch. The writing of today’s episode by Andrea Archer Compton was nuanced and heart-wrenching. Here’s hoping the writing continues to serve the drama rather than undercut it.
