After several months as Zombie Sam, General Hospital’s fieriest heroine is finally getting her groove back.
The Sam that viewers have known and loved for the bulk of the 15 years actress Kelly Monaco has portrayed her is finally recognizable again.
She’s getting back to her real self – the spirited PI who prefers leather jackets to nine-to-five wear and solving cases to sitting behind a desk at Aurora Media.
Sam tried to reinvent herself, when she decided to stay with Drew (Billy Miller). She tried to fit into the safe world that he created for her and their family and leave behind the woman she was when she was married to Jason (Steve Burton). But it was never who she was at the core, and she’s finally acknowledged it.
Swiss Connection
Sam came alive when she ran into Jason in Switzerland, and he filled her in on the search for Henrik and his plot with Spinelli (Bradford Anderson).
Within minutes, she was ready — downright eager to get involved in the action. She knew she could help and was practically foaming at the mouth at the mere thought of it. The part of herself that she had tried so hard to bury was ready for a resurrection, and you could sense her reinvigoration.
Happy at Last
Then, Sam took things a step further when she addressed the situation with her mother Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn), who suddenly turned up on the scene.
Less than thrilled at the prospect her daughter being lured back into Jason’s world, Sam immediately set her straight. And, after hearing her out, there was little Alexis could say or do or argue with.
“I’m a PI, Mom. It’s what I’m good at,” said Sam, adding that it had been “a really, really long time” since she’d been able to do something she was good at.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to breathe and be me, and I’m actually looking forward to it.” Case closed. The fun fierce Sam was on her way back.
Back Where She Belongs
And she didn’t miss a beat as she thrust herself back into the world of espionage with Jason and Spinelli. Watching the threesome bamboozle the hapless Swiss banker was perfectly orchestrated, and you could see Sam come to life as the caper unfolded.
She was doing the work she loved, the work she was born to do, and the work was so darn good at.
As a viewer, you could sense Sam’s sheer joy at being back in her element. Like she told Alexis, she was able to breathe and be herself, again. It’s been a long time coming, but Sam is finally back where she belongs.
