There’s a real world out there, and General Hospital is pretending to be a part of it. If that’s the case, as a show ostensibly set in a hospital, should GH be dealing with the Coronavirus epidemic?
And if it does, should they show how it affects the people of Port Charles? What over 6,000 fans would like to see happen:
Heck, no, a majority 75% of you are jumping up, making the universal symbol for No Way, Jose. You tune into your soaps for escape, not realism. It’s bad enough the shows are constantly being interrupted for some governor or mayor to explain why what they’re doing is absolutely right, and why what everyone else is doing is absolutely wrong. If they then returned to their originally scheduled programming and there was even MORE coronavirus talk, you’d go mad.
Besides, can you imagine what a soap opera on social distancing would look like? Soaps are based on two things: secrets whispered in close confidence – which are then overheard by somebody standing way closer than six feet, and very, very close physical contact. The kind that periodically makes babies. Coronavirus would take away both of those things. If you do that, you might as well take away soaps.
Soaps have told the same old stories over and over again. This is a great chance to mix it up a bit, cheer a smaller 25% of the audience. Let’s see what kind of stories can be told when characters can’t overhear whispered secrets – or accidentally make babies with the wrong person.
Wouldn’t you love to see Sonny (Maurice Benard) trapped at home with Carly (Laura Wright), neither able to storm off in a huff? Or Sam (Kelly Monaco) forced to take care of her own children without being able to dump them on Monica (Leslie Charleson)? It’s a whole new world! General Hospital (GH) airs weekdays on ABC.
