Fans were distraught when General Hospital’s Dominic Zamprogna decided to walk away from the show in 2018. The actor played the long-lost son of mobster Sonny Corinthos and Olivia Falconeri Quartermaine from 2009 to 2018 and had only been back for brief appearances since his departure until recently returning to the show full-time.
The Daytime Emmy-nominated actor recently appeared on Morning Live and spoke with host Bob Cowan about the tough decision he made to depart the role.
In the segment, which was posted on Twitter, Zamprogna explained that as an actor, stability is often hard to come by, and while he was grateful for the 10 years he had of that during his first stint on the show, with that comes the desire to do other roles, and that’s one of the reasons he decided to leave.
“When you’re on a show for 10 years, you don’t get much opportunity to do other projects because of scheduling conflicts and stuff like that,” he said. “It was a bit like, if I don’t do it now, when will I do it? You have to establish yourself in this town, and I hadn’t at that point.”
He was also thinking “big-picture,” of paying bills and supporting a family—he even joked, “I kept having kids”—and wanted to see what was out there for him.
Zamprogna expressed he loved his time on GH, but explained he felt like he was in “a bubble” as far as seeing casting people for other jobs, so he wanted a little break. Now though, he’s back and fans are loving it.
When he left, Dante was sent off on an undercover WSB mission. After returning and realizing he was suffering from PTSD, he left again and asked Lulu (Emme Rylan) for a divorce. But now that Sonny’s eldest son is back, he should be looking to reclaim his life and trying to put the demons of being brainwashed behind him. How far will he go to reclaim his family? Stay tuned!
