If General Hospital Needed A Pregnancy…We Have Some Alternative Moms

At the moment, the Soap Hub jury is out on Carly and Sonny’s latest General Hospital pregnancy. We can’t see why THIS couple — that barely shares a romantic moment and has kids via various affairs and marriages — needs to be pregnant.

Perhaps a high risk and advanced maternal age pregnancy can be interesting, but we think there are a few other mothers who could have had much more compelling baby stories.

First, there’s newly-married Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst), who wed an accused serial killer in prison, much to her oldest son’s horror. Franco (Roger Howarth) feared having kids with Nina (Michelle Stafford) because he didn’t want to pass on his genetics, but has since become a loving and fun father to her three boys.

And yes, Elizabeth already has several children from various relationships, just like Carly (Laura Wright) , but she doesn’t have any girls. And she’s never been in this particular happy place in her life where a pregnancy would just fit.

Then, we have poor Kim (Tamara Braun), who has been given the task of being Carly’s OB while her son, Carly’s daughter’s boyfriend, is dying of cancer.

The look on her face when she left Carly and Sonny in the exam room said it all. Why do they get this kind of happiness as she watches her only child fade away?

A one-night stand with Drew (Billy Miller) could have produced a pregnancy and the pair would get that chance to raise a child together they never got with Oscar (Garren Stitt).

They could also feel all that guilt asking themselves if they are replacing one child with another while that first child still lives.

Julian (William deVry) could also father a child with Kim, bringing him into his first healthy relationship that also creates a little family. This would show us how far the character has come, just like Franco and Elizabeth.

Finally, we have Ava (Maura West). Yes, Ava, a woman currently sleeping with the serial killer who brutally murdered her daughter last fall.

Of course, she has no idea he’s the killer and also has no idea he’s not Dr. Kevin Collins (Jon Lindstrom), but instead his demented twin, Ryan.

Imagine learning you’re pregnant with this man’s child. Imagine then learning that man killed your daughter. What do you do?

We know Ava loved Kiki (Hayley Erin) fiercely despite her many mistakes and is devoted to her pre-schooler, Avery, despite Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Carly deciding Ava only gets to raise her when they see fit.

Would Ava actually contemplate terminating a pregnancy once learning who fathered the child?

See? Some compelling story there. One would give two characters and couples a happy ‘ending’ (which we’d hope would not be the end) and the two would provide oodles of story and months of conflict. But, alas, it does not seem meant to be.
