GH’s Dr. Mayes Says Goodbye to Port Charles

The intimidating Dr. Matthew Mayes didn’t have a long life at “General Hospital” but during the time he spent there, he made his mark.

Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliott) and Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) fired him as their doc on the spot. But, now it looks like he had an even bigger enemy because he’s dead.

Time to Leave
“Frank told me in a little aside that we had in the second to last episode we were doing, so I had a warning before going in,” actor Matt Riedy told Soap Opera Digest of Dr. Mayes’ out-of-the-blue death

Riedy said his GH experience was a dream come true, especially as a lifelong fan.

“I’ve been around this show all my life because my mother watched and I would sit down with her after school and watch,” he said.

A Complicated Man
As for why Dr. Mayes was often so harsh, Riedy said he created a backstory for the character to explain it. He decided Mayes was a widower and estranged from his daughter, making his life miserable.

“Having the opportunity to work with these people and — working! I want to work, and they’re a great bunch. I’m thankful for it. So, at the drop of a hat, I would be back.”
