A few years ago on General Hospital (GH), Obrecht got up to warble the classic Peggy Lee (and Bette Midler… and Chaka Khan… and Mad Men) tune, Is That All There Is? (This was while she was in hiding, so the whole thing was stupid, but we’re letting bygones be bygones for the purpose of this example.)
It’s also how GH fans are feeling about Jason’s (Steve Burton) return. So much build up… so little pay-off. (Plenty of abs, though.) Are you disappointed? Here’s how over 3,000 viewers voted:
Thumbs Down
You mourned when Jason “died.” You cheered when he returned – the first time. You got used to Jason’s new look, and you were happy to see him reunite with Sam (Kelly Monaco).
And then, it got even better! Original Jason was back! The other guy was revealed to be Drew (Billy Miller), and 78% of you plopped on the edge of your seats, expecting months of riveting story-line.
And then… uhm… noting much happened. Jason went back to working for Sonny (Maurice Benard).
He reconnected with Carly (Laura Wright), Michael (Chad Duell), and Spinelli (Bradford Anderson), and he stared longingly at Sam, while tonelessly telling her she should make her own decision.
She chose Drew. Jason’s facial expression and tone didn’t waver. The she wavered. Jason didn’t. Now Sam doesn’t know who she wants and… that’s about it.
Thumbs Up
This is great, 21% of you cheer, good, old-fashioned, classic soap opera storytelling! What fun would it be if Sam knew right away that she’d made a mistake with Drew and wanted Jason? That’s not a story!
Jason coming back has had action – crashing through the ceiling! – pathos – Jason with baby Scout! – and, most importantly, slow burning romance. You would have it any other way, and anyone who would just doesn’t understand daytime drama!
