Helena Cassadine is one of General Hospital’s greatest villains. Now, fans of the legendary character are learning some surprising news about the beloved baddie, played by Constance Towers.
Welcome Back, Constance Towers
Highlight Hollywood is reporting that Towers is reprising her role as Helena and is set to appear in some upcoming episodes of the ABC soap.
“For months Port Charles has been dancing around the obvious,” reports Highlight Hollywood. “Helena Cassadine is returning in February to wreak havoc and to settle some scores. Highlight Hollywood has exclusively confirmed the return of Constance Towers during February Sweeps.”
The site goes on to say that Towers taped scenes back in December and they were originally set to air February 4 and 5, but due to pre-emptions related to the recent impeachment trial, the air dates have been adjusted.
Towers is the third actress to play Helena. The role was originated by GH celebrity fan Elizabeth Taylor, who wanted to appear on the series. The show created the role of Mikkos Cassadine’s (John Colicos) widow for her to play.
Seemingly benevolent, Helena cut a big check to General Hospital (the hospital — not the show) and a local university. However, she showed up at Laura (Genie Francis) and Luke’s (Anthony Geary) wedding and cursed the couple. It’s safe to say the hex worked as the couple’s marriage ended in divorce.
Dimitra Arliss briefly played the role in 1996 before Towers took over the part the following year. No word on what Helena will be doing this time in Port Charles, but Highlight Hollywood assures that “revenge” will be on the menu. Don’t be surprised if Helena’s presence ties into the recent allegations that Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) is her son — and not Mikkos’.
Trivia note: When Towers appeared on the daytime soap Capitol as Clarissa, she and then co-star Carolyn Jones (ex-Myrna) presented Geary with his first Daytime Emmy for playing Luke. General Hospital airs weekdays on ABC. Check local listings for air times.
