It’s no secret that General Hospital’s Carly Corinthos and Nina Reeves have some massive chips on their shoulders but all it takes is one look at their history to see which one might deserve to have one and which one has absolutely no sense of self-awareness at all.
Let us never forget that Nina (Cynthia Watros) spent 20 years in a coma that was caused by her mother giving her an overdose of antidepressants that was supposed to induce a miscarriage and not almost kill her. She woke up to find the world went on without her, she was never going to get to raise the baby she was carrying, her husband had moved on with several women over the years, and the mistress he had when he was married to her really did have his child and get to raise her to adulthood.
That would be enough to drive almost anyone to have a psychotic break, which is what happened when Nina induced Ava Jerome’s (Maura West) labor and took a newborn Avery, whom she named Jaime Sommers, to raise as her own. And Ava has forgiven her for this and is now her best friend. Nina admits she’s made mistake after mistake but keeps plodding on knowing she can’t change the past. And Carly (Laura Wright)? Well, she is a whole different story.
Carly arrived in Port Charles with a meteor-sized chip on her shoulder in the 1990s and that chip has just grown ever since. And why? Oh, because she was given up for adoption and raised by a kind lady in Florida who never wanted to do anything but love her.
That led her to seduce her biological mother’s husband, pass her kid off as anyone else’s kid except his biological father’s kid, commit countless felonies as a mob wife over the years, and in 2021, she even kidnapped an old lady. In Carly’s mind, all of her actions were justified and she never issued a word of apology because this is who Carly is.
Was Nina doing the right thing when she didn’t tell Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) who he was for six months (not nine)? No, she did not. Did Carly set the whole thing in motion by deciding to keep the truth about Nelle Benson (Chloe Lanier) being Nina’s daughter from her? Yes, absolutely. Did Nina try to tell Carly that Sonny was alive the moment she saw him? Yes, she sure did, but Carly yapped away on the phone to Nina about how horrible Nina is, so Nina, said, yeah, not telling you. Poor choice? Yes. Any worse than anything Carly has ever done? Nope. Not even close.
And Carly is about to do it again by keeping the fact that Nina had twins a secret — from Nina and Nelle’s twin, Willow Tait (Katelyn MacMullen). Carly has never learned from one mistake she has made and likely never will.
