General Hospital characters can commit all kinds of sins, yes, even murder, and they’re forgiven with great frequency. Well, unless you call the SEC and turn in some folks who’ve knowingly committed a crime. But let’s talk about one character who calls things like they are — Dr. Portia Robinson.
The good doctor has taken a vow to help people medically but she’s taken no such oath about forgiving and forgetting — especially Cyrus Renault (Jeff Kober), the man who held her and her daughter Trina (Tabyana Ali) hostage.
Cyrus is out of prison as the door at Pentonville prison has once again proven revolving. The ex-con may have had good intentions when he inquired about Curtis’s condition, but Portia (Brook Kerr) wasn’t interested. Sure, he’s claimed to be reformed but the good doctor couldn’t help but remember how Cyrus held her and Trina hostage.
“You really think that I’m going to forget that you terrorized me and my daughter in our home, the gunfire, the standoff,” Portia said, reminding Cyrus of the ordeal he made her and Trina endure. “I never thought I would say this but I agree with Heather Webber [Alley Mills]. Stay away from my child. Don’t ever ever go near Trina again. Do you understand that? I will call a cop so fast. Your head is gonna spin.”
We wonder why characters on soaps don’t have longer memories like Portia. The irony of all this is at the same time this exchange was going on, law officials — Anna (Finola Hughes), Jagger (Adam Harrington), Dante (Dominic Zamprogna), and Chase (Josh Swickard) — were having another showdown with Sonny (Maurice), Ava (Maura West), and Selena Wu (Lydia Look). Anna was concerned about her pal, Sonny; and Jagger and Ava were practically flirting with one another!
We soon realized that Jagger has not forgotten about Sonny’s treatment of his late wife Karen (Cari Shayne) but others on the PCPD often give Sonny a pass. Yes, he makes donations to the hospital and to the Nurses Ball. Yes, he loves his kids (even though they often pay the price because of their father’s ties to the mob). But he’s still often on the wrong side of the law.
We’re wondering why characters don’t call out Sonny the way that Portia refuses to give Cyrus a pass. Does everyone not remember that Sonny shot and killed AJ (Sean Kanan)– Michael’s (Chad Duell) birth father — at Ava’s behest? The only regret Sonny’s ever shown over this impulsive act was that his actions resulted in breaking his promise to Michael!
Sure, Ava set Sonny up to commit the act but he still pulled the trigger. Ava’s no innocent herself. Remember how she killed innocent Connie Falconeri (Kelly Sullivan) AKA Kate Howard? She eluded going to jail for that just as Sonny served very little time for killing AJ. Of course, we want these actors and their characters on the story canvas but it is odd not to see other characters feel uncomfortable around them due to how AJ and Connie were murdered.
We certainly understand Portia not forgiving Cyrus. The real question is — why does pretty much everyone in town ignore the fact that Sonny and Ava are both cold-blooded killers? A simple solution to this would be to reveal that AJ (whose death has been faked before) and Connie are both still alive — somehow. Yes, it would stretch credibility but it would also remove the fact that Sonny and Ava have each committed the ultimate sin. Not that anyone ever points that out to them.
