While watching Spencer Cassadine and Esme Prince’s showdown at Wyndemere on General Hospital as Trina Robinson’s trial got underway in court was entertaining, the scenes were also perplexing because it’s preposterous that Spencer thought his little plan to blackmail Esme into a confession would work.
General Hospital: Spencer Cassadine Wasn’t Thinking Straight
From the start, Spencer’s (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) plot to get Esme (Avery Kristen Pohl) to believe he had tracked down her birth mother had as many holes as Swiss cheese. First, we don’t remember Esme ever expressing interest in her birth mother to Spencer, so why would he think she wanted that information so badly? We know she asked Daddy Ryan Chamberlain (Jon Lindstrom) about her mother but never said much to Spencer.
Second, if Spencer thought Esme was really so cunning and conniving — which she indeed is — why would he think she wouldn’t see right through his bluff. Spencer didn’t even seem remotely believable when he first tried to trick Cameron Webber (William Lipton) with this story, so why would he seem believable to Esme?
GH: Foolhardy Thinking
Sure, he’d give her whatever she wanted if she just confesses that Esme set up the girl she has felt jealous of since the moment she arrived in Port Charles. All he had to do was say Trina’s (Tabyana Ali) name, and Esme knew for sure he was trying to pull one over on her.
Spencer even said Esme was sick and twisted when she set fire to Ava Jerome Cassadine’s (Maura West) car and left Kiki Jerome’s (Hayley Erin) old hospital ID badge for her to find. It didn’t occur to him that Esme is twisted enough to give up any false hope of ever finding her birth mother just to make sure he and Trina were hurt as much as possible.
General Hospital: Why Couldn’t Spencer Use His Adults?
No matter how much Spencer wants to feel like a man, he is still a teenager, and there were plenty of adults willing to help him save Trina and bring down Esme. That included both Britt Westbourne (Kelly Thiebaud) and Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco), so why couldn’t Spencer just take the help offered to him in his misguided attempt to help Trina?
In the end, Spencer could just help her the most by confessing he was with her when the sex video was released, but then that would hurt him, wouldn’t it? Perhaps it’s time that Spencer mans up, gets rid of Esme honestly, and tells the truth about his little sojourn from Spring Ridge that Victor Cassadine (Charles Shaughnessy) arranged. Anything is better than a convoluted plot Esme was never going to fall for.
