William Lipton and his portrayal of Cameron Webber is a reminder that every soap needs a good guy, a standup dude who’ll do the right thing. General Hospital had that in original cast member John Beradino (Dr. Steve Hardy). That legacy is continuing with Lipton’s Cameron, who just happens to be Steve’s great-grandson. For his earnest portrayal of Cameron, Soap Hub bestows Performer of the Week for GH honors on Lipton.
We suspect that anyone who tries to win Josslyn Jacks’s (Eden McCoy) heart is going to find a formidable obstacle in Cameron Webber (William Lipton). He’s a rock in Joss’s life and, as we recently saw, he’s also a loyal pal to Spencer Cassadine (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) even when he doesn’t deserve it. But that’s what’s special about what Lipton brings to Cameron; he may be young but Lipton shows that Cameron knows it’s easy to stand by someone when everything’s going well — a true friend will stick by you when times are tough!
The only ‘problem’ with good guys is that they don’t have the best poker faces. Cameron couldn’t exactly hide the truth when Spencer pointedly asked if Trina Robinson (Tabyana Ali) knew about him believing in her innocence all along when it came to Joss and Cameron’s sex video.
Joss shared that Trina does know so she and Cam tap-danced as fast as they could to come up with viable reasons as to why Trina hadn’t come to see their incarcerated pal. In an effort to boost Spencer’s spirits and combat his self-hatred comments, Cameron recounted the time he started a fire at Spencer’s birthday party when they were kids, which left literal scars on the Cassadine heir. Cam noted that if Spencer can look past that and be his friend today then, perhaps other relationships can have staying power, too.
“Spencer, I choose you as my friend…” he told Spencer, “that’s what friendship is…loving someone with the inevitability that they’ll let you down.” Spencer tried to make light of his cousin’s heartfelt words by calling him a sap, but Cameron wouldn’t let up. He wished his friend well and told him that he wanted him to be okay and safe so that when Spencer gets out, he’ll know he has some friends waiting for him.
Later, Cameron and Joss re-affirmed their love for one another by spending the night together. As she was on her way out the door the next morning, Dr. Hamilton Finn (Michael Easton) showed up and there was no denying what had transpired the night before.
Finn isn’t quite Cam’s stepdad (yet?) but he couldn’t help but inquire as to what had likely transpired with Joss just hours ago. Finn playfully shot back to Cam, “You got any proof?” when Cameron asked if Elizabeth Webber (Rebecca Herbst) had asked the good doctor to check up on him and his brothers. Proving turnabout is fair play — and that Cameron can be respectful while keeping his personal life private — Cam, as in any great verbal tennis match, shot back to the kind doc, “You got any proof?” when Finn noted that Joss likely had spent the night.
When Cameron realized that he knew more about his mom’s out-of-town visit than Finn did, he gently broke the news to the doctor that Liz was in the same town as her parents. Finn was lost as to what Liz is going through but Cameron offered a theory — he believes he and his mom struggle with the same baggage and that folks may underestimate what they are capable of handling. Cam explained that Finn trying to help Liz has the potential to make her feel helpless — the last thing that Finn wants. “I know your heart is in the right place…she doesn’t need you to be her hero because she’s already her own hero,” noted Cameron, showing a maturity wise beyond his years.
Quite frankly, it’s the kind of insight and advice that Steve Hardy might have doled out to a loved one. Bravo to William Lipton for carrying on the great tradition of compassionate leading men in Port Charles.
