The way Sofia Mattsson portrayed Sasha suffering after her husband’s death was heartbreaking.

Sasha Gilmore Corbin, played by Sofia Mattsson, had endured great heartache with the loss of her son last year and now, fate has been even crueler by making her a widow. For her performance as a woman who has had to say goodbye to the man she loves, Soap Hub bestows Performer of the Week honors for GH to Mattsson.

Sofia Mattsson – Performer of the Week

With Brando Corbin’s (Johnny Wactor) untimely passing at the hands of Port Charles’ latest killer, we saw Sofia Mattsson (Sasha) crumble to the floor of General Hospital. A few days later, Sasha sought solace in Brando’s garage, speaking words that many who’ve lost loved ones have uttered. “Brando. Can you hear me? Brando? Please tell me you didn’t leave me.” Mattsson brought great emotion to those utterances. While Sasha’s husband didn’t intentionally leave her, the pain is so great that Sasha can’t help but pose the question the way she did.

Sasha hoped against hope that Brando had somehow come back to her when she heard a noise, but it was merely Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard), who had come to check on her well-being. Sasha embraced Sonny, holding onto him for dear life. She composed herself, as best she could, and forced a smile as she told Sonny how much Brando loved the garage that he’d given him. She then crumbled again (that’s going to happen a lot, we can imagine) after Sonny told her that the best thing that ever happened to Brando wasn’t the garage but rather Sasha herself.

While spending time in her late husband’s garage gave Sasha (Sofia Mattsson) a trace of comfort, it wasn’t long before the reality of his permanent loss set in once again. “Brando is gone,” she said. “No matter how many times I pretend or wish or try to convince myself that it’s just a horrible nightmare, Brando isn’t here. He’s not anywhere.”

In an attempt to comfort Sasha, Sonny talked about his late son Morgan Corinthos (Bryan Craig). Sasha asked how long it was before Sonny stopped scanning for Morgan in crowds or expected him to be on the other end of the phone after he’d heard it ring. Sonny said he still does.

Diane Miller (Carolyn Hennesy) showed up with a somber reality check — Sasha no longer has Brando as her husband but she also no longer has him as her guardian, which was going to help keep her out of jail. “Am I going to prison?” Sasha wondered. (What else is this woman going to go through?) While Diane is going to do her best to keep Sasha out of the big house (if, that is, she manages to escape the Grim Reaper herself), it’s only one of many of Sasha’s many problems.

She has to not only deal with her conservatorship but also has to find a way to move forward now that the love of her life is gone. Sofia Mattsson delivered a heartbreaking performance last year when her son with Brando died shortly after childbirth. Now, she’s been given additional powerful material to play and, once again, the actress has more than delivered. Brava!
