Lynn Herring continues to show that Lucy Coe is one of daytime’s most vibrant players thanks to an effervescent quality with which the actress imbues her General Hospital character. Recently, the show’s writers placed Herring’s character where Lucy shines best — in over her head! For her always-entertaining work, Soap Hub bestows Performer of the Week honors for GH on Herring.
Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) was happy to have an ally in her quest to bring down Victor Cassadine (Charles Shaughnessy) but once it became clear that Lucy (Lynn Herring) was in danger, the super spy insisted that Lucy pull back. While Anna’s an irresistible force, Lucy, as Herring has shown over the years, is an immovable object! When the ex-librarian wants something, nothing and no one — not even the dynamic Anna Devane — is going to stand in her way.
It was great fun watching Herring recount Lucy’s antics over the years to Anna about how she’s gone up against Bobbie Spencer (Jackie Zeman), Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot), and everyone else, ending up in her ‘underthings’ when she’s hosted numerous Nurses Balls, and how she wore a beautiful red dress with a big red hat to her wedding (to the late Alan Quartermaine, played by the beloved Stuart Damon). “And you know what?” Lucy added. “I. Made. It. Work. So, I’m not scared and I’m not a quitter. I’m going to see this thing through to the end!”
Anna continued to push back, practically threatening Lucy not to proceed further. Lucy noted that Victor Cassadine was wrapped around her finger and, looking up to the sky, noted that he wasn’t the first Victor she had eating out her hand. This was a clever reference to the late Victor Jerome (Jack Axelrod), a mobster who took a fancy to Lucy. In the late 1980s, he died after ingesting a heart-shaped piece pendant he had made for Lucy. Ironically, jewelry may be Lucy’s downfall this time.
We’re referring of course to the bling that Victor gifted Lucy which doubles as a bug; he’s onto her! Lucy’s Achilles’ heel is that while she knows how to charm men, they certainly know how to charm her right back — which is what Victor did when they met up at the Metro Court. Lucy nearly bit her lip as Victor continued to compliment her. Was she flirting with Victor because she wanted to bring Luke Spencer’s (Anthony Geary) alleged killer to justice and to help Anna — or did she enjoy Victor’s attention? Based on the performance by Lynn Herring, we suspect it’s a bit of both.
After exchanging a quip and a peck with longtime pal Scotty Baldwin (Kin Shriner), Lucy headed to the pier to rendezvous with Victor. She met instead a gun-wielding familiar face (Anna Devane? The late Alex Devane?) who fired two shots into her! Oh, no! Has Lucy finally taken on more than she can handle? We sure hope not! Lynn Herring can’t be back on our screens soon enough!
Honorable Mention: We got to see the terrific Linda Purl reprise her role as Peyton Honeycutt one last time (though we certainly hope to see her again) as Carly Corinthos’s (Laura Wright) story in Florida came to a conclusion. Peyton’s stance towards Carly softened after hearing her declare how passionately she felt about her late adoptive mother, Virginia Benson (the late, great Lois Nettleton); this allowed Purl to tap into different colors of her character. We now know that Peyton is a woman capable of compassion and change. While many people travel south to Florida during the winter months, we’re hoping GH finds a way for Purl’s Peyton to migrate north to Port Charles, New York this fall. The actress brings a sophisticated quality to daytime drama!
