Kelly Thiebaud showed new sides of her General Hospital alter-ego Dr. Britt Westbourne, who hit both a figurative wall and, literally, the water during a singles mixer/charity event held at the Metro Court pool. As a result, the actress has earned Soap Hub’s Performer of the Week for GH honors.
Kelly Thiebaud – Performer of the Week
Britt had so many emotions churning inside her by the time she arrived at the pool event the alcohol she was consuming didn’t seem to really affect her — at least not at first. She has been through quite a bit the last year — losing Jason Morgan (Steve Burton), finding out she has the genetic markers for Huntington’s disease, and nearly losing her life at the hands of her half-brother Peter August (Wes Ramsey).
Britt’s due a break in the romance department but she wasn’t getting one at the mixer. The good doctor showed up in a bad mood and not even the presence of her pals Maxie Jones (Kirsten Storms), Brad Cooper (Parry Shen), and Dr. Terry Randolph (Cassandra James) got Britt to calm down. “WE NEED THEM!” Britt yelled at a Metro Court waitress as she snatched an entire tray of drinks from the terrified server for herself and her friends.
Britt pressed the pause button on her pity party long enough to ask Terry about her romance with Chet Driscoll (Chris Van Etten). “Love sucks!” Britt lamented after Terry told her it wasn’t going to work out with the handsome veteran. Britt’s frustration over being single continued after she spied Maxie and Austin Gatlin-Holt (Roger Howarth) canoodling at the event. Maxie pointed out to Britt that the gala was for couples — not just singles — as it was a charity fundraiser along with being a mixer for eligible folks. “Oh, my God!” Britt (Kelly Thiebaud) exclaimed. “I’m officially a charity case!”
While many actors have said that the key to playing drunk is to play against it and have their character try to act not drunk, the entertaining Thiebaud chose a different path — she had Britt whoop it up! The actress embraced the words written by scriptwriter Dave Rupel and went to town. Emotions escalated as Spinelli (Bradford Anderson) optimistically attempted to counter Britt’s tirade to no avail. “Once you care for them, they leave you!” Britt said after Spinelli told her the right one will come along.
Britt scoffed at the conclusion of Casablanca (noting star-crossed lovers Rick and Ilsa did not end up together — she’s right about that!) “There is no love in Port Charles,” Britt shouted. “All the good ones are taken — or dead.” (RIP, Jason!)
And then, as if on cue, skydiving shirtless newcomer Cody Bell (Josh Kelly) parachuted into the scene, onto Britt, and into the pool. Instead of being cooled off by the pool water, Britt only became more irate and she took her frustrations out on Cody, the hottie man responsible for her taking a dunk.
While most of the attendees couldn’t help but notice Cody’s fit physique (yeah, we’re looking at you Brad!), Britt focused on having Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna) arrest the man who turned out to be his childhood pal.
After Cody was escorted away, Spinelli brought Britt some coffee to help sober her up. Brad fantasized in the future about looking back on this day with fond memories given Cody’s appeal. “Don’t go getting any ideas,” Britt admonished Brad. “[Cody] is all mine.” And, fortunately, Kelly Thiebaud’s talented GH performances are all ours!
Honorable Mention: Real Andrews’ Marcus Taggert may owe the GH set designers new furniture. Playing the protective dad, Marcus nearly clawed the chair he was sitting in while grilling Officer Rory Cabrera (Michael Kruse) who was hanging out with his daughter Trina Robinson (Tabyana Ali). Given Trina’s current legal woes, Marcus’ intensity towards Rory was two-fold!
Honorable Mention: Britt (Kelly Thiebaud) wasn’t the only one who got thrown into the deep end this past week. Robert Adamson (ex-Noah, The Young and the Restless) subbed for Chad Duell as Michael Corinthos in the middle of Wiley’s visitation court case. The actor had to absorb lots of backstory and interpersonal character dynamics to perform his task. He pulled off his scenes quite well. Here’s hoping GH finds a new role for Adamson to play on the show in the future.
