Heather Webber may be incarcerated at Spring Ridge minimum security prison on General Hospital, but her portrayer, Alley Mills, is playing the character as if Heather’s doors are all wide open. For her portrayal of a deeply disturbed yet chillingly present woman, Soap Hub bestows Performer of the Week Honors upon Mills who’s quickly made the character of Heather her own.
Mills was thrown into the deep end when she made her debut as Heather given GH’s non-stop can’t-miss-an-episode pace. As Heather’s story has continued recently, she’s encountered for the first time (on-screen) in over 40 years her ex-husband Dr. Jeff Webber, was visited by Sonny Corinthos, and had a battle of wits and played a dark version of ‘The Way We Were’ with fellow Ryan Chamberlin (Jon Lindstrom). In each episode, Mills shined, proving she has a grasp of just who Heather Webber is. Mills is delving into the different facets of her character and is serving up terrific performances along the way.
Presumably, Heather and Jeff had some interaction after she left Port Charles when she moved to Las Vegas to be near him and Steven Lars in the mid-1980s. It was clear that the two never found common ground given the animosity Jeff (William Moses) aimed toward his ex-wife. Heather knew Jeff was guarded around her but she couldn’t help but tease him the way that ex-spouses can and sometimes do with one another. Jeff made his position clear but Mills brought moments of levity to these scenes. As far as Heather’s concerned, Jeff’s not her main focus anymore.
Heather was less in control when she received a surprise visitor in her room — Sonny (Maurice Benard). The ‘coffee importer,’ in his own inimitable style, let Heather know it’d be in her best interests to not be able to identify the driver of the police van (as the driver was Dex) that was also carrying a now-escaped Anna Devane (Finola Hughes). Heather may be psychotic but she’s not foolish; she knew that Sonny could make her life very difficult inside Spring Ridge or any other facility. It was fascinating to watch Heather process what Sonny was telling her. Even she fears the famous mobster.
GH saved the best — or perhaps ‘worst’ — for last when handing Mills a series of dynamite episodes that the actress played the hell out of. At the end of the week, Heather had an extended private visit with serial killer Dr. Ryan Chamberlin, a man she once knew as ‘Richard’ when she was using the handle ‘Hazel.’ In a sick twisted game of back and forth, Mills and Lindstrom recalled their passionate affair from years ago and how they came into each other’s lives when both of them were living far away from Port Charles.
Alley Mills got physical with scene partner Lindstrom for a reason — this was Heather’s way of confirming that he wasn’t so incapacitated as he’d like Ava Jerome Cassadine (Maura West) and everyone else to believe. Heather called Ryan out on his big fake, giving Lindstrom a rare chance to speak some dialogue in a scene. We learned that he was greatly hurt by ‘Hazel’s’ sudden departure from his life but…he knows she didn’t live him alone.
If what every GH fan who can put two and two together is true, we suspect that eventually, Alley Mills will be sharing screen time with another captive character whose name just happens to be Esme Prince (Avery Kristen Pohl)! Kudos to Mills for handling a heavy workload last week as she showed numerous sides to Heather Webber.
