On the Couch: Why GH’s Holly Sutton Is Willing To Give Up Everything For Ethan

Holly Sutton made a pair of confessions to Robert on General Hospital. She still loves him and wants to be with him forever. But she doesn’t want to drag him down due to her ongoing quest to rescue her son, Ethan, from yet another con artist-related mess.

Holly (Emma Samms) and Robert (Tristan Rogers) were forced to say goodbye — again — because Holly put her adult child ahead of the love of her life. Why would she do such a thing? We pop her on the GH couch to find out.

The Bad Old GH Days

When viewers first met Holly back in the early 1980s, she was a con artist being manipulated by her family into a relationship with Luke (Anthony Geary) — and fleecing of all his friends of their money. Holly fell in love with Luke and wanted out. But her family kidnapped her and spirited her away to British Columbia, threatening her father and nanny’s lives if she didn’t cooperate.

Holly Sutton Gets A General Hospital Guilt Trip

Holly didn’t get the chance to raise Ethan. And yet he turned out to be a con artist anyway. Nature must trump nurture in this case. Or it’s a combination of both. In any case, Holly feels guilty about Ethan’s hard-knock life. So guilty, that when it comes to choosing between him and Robert, she opts for Ethan every single time.

It’s kind of a weird call. A child, we’d understand. But Ethan is an adult. He should be responsible for his stupid, reckless actions — no matter how many orphanages he funds with his ill-gotten gains. So why is Holly still sticking up for him?

GH: Subconscious Unconscious

Holly insists on sticking up for Ethan…because no one ever stood up for her. At least, no member of her family. She was abandoned when she was younger than Ethan is now and left to fend for herself. Holly knows what that’s like. And she won’t allow Ethan to suffer in a similar manner. No matter what — or who — it costs her.
