GH’s Willow Tait Is Having The Longest First Trimester In Soap Pregnancy History

It was June 30 when Willow Tait learned she was pregnant on General Hospital, meaning she was pregnant for several weeks before that in order for her pregnancy test to have come back positive. Yet, somehow, in October, she is still in her first trimester with just a few more weeks to go, which is what Willow has been telling us since August. Again, in case you weren’t checking your calendar (which clearly, Willow hasn’t been doing), it is now October.

Willow Tait — The Nurse Can’t Do The Math

In real life, the first trimester of pregnancy lasts 13 weeks, with women knowing they are pregnant for maybe eight to nine weeks of that time. That means, by late August, when Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) made the decision to hold off on treating her leukemia until she was out of her first trimester, she should already have been out of that trimester, making chemo safer for her unborn child.

We realized that back in August, but let that little tidbit go, telling ourselves this is a soap and these things happen, but now that it’s October and Willow continues to claim that she still has a little bit to go until she can try to save her own life, we have had it.

The Never-Ending First Trimester For Plot Purposes

Never mind that GH had the perfect opportunity to tell a story about pro-choice options when the life of the mother is at stake in the very timely 2022 and chose to ignore that; the soap is just using Willow’s never-ending first trimester to make her sicker and sicker so that she needs bone marrow from birth mom Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros) probably in time for November sweeps. (Of course, at the rate GH is going, that could happen during February sweeps when Willow should be giving birth but will likely still be in her first trimester.)

Willow’s long and winding first trimester only serves as an example of this soap forgetting storylines for weeks and sometimes months at a time so that it gets to feature nearly every member of its super-bloated cast on a rotating basis. Then, when the storyline is picked up again, GH wants us to believe that no time has passed. But, when we are talking a pregnancy and a delay in cancer treatment due to a finite thing like a first trimester, time has to pass.

Fans didn’t see Willow for an entire month, and when she did pop up again, she was telling TJ Ashford (Tajh Bellow) the exact same thing she told her OB Britt Westbourne a month ago — that she knows she is doing the right thing by allowing her cancer to get worse, but only for a few more weeks. How many “few more weeks” do we have to hear about until Willow’s first trimester ends and this storyline actually gains some traction?

Let’s not even mention the fact that Willow has looked like death warmed over for months, and her self-involved boyfriend and father of her child, Michael Corinthos (Chad Duell), hasn’t even noticed.
