Harrison Chase may not be a doctor at General Hospital, like his brother, Finn, but he seems to think he knows how their father, Gregory, should be dealing with his ALS diagnosis. Chase keeps insisting that Gregory shouldn’t be living in denial. He needs to be preparing for his inevitable decline, and that includes making end-of-life plans, and using a cane to make sure he doesn’t collapse again. Gregory said no. Chase really, really needs to respect that.
Chase (Josh Swickard) did have a point about Gregory’s (Gregory Harrison) illness not only being about him. He’s not the only one affected by it. Chase is affected by it. Finn (Michael Easton) is affected by it. Violet (Jophielle Love) is affected by it. They are allowed to have feelings, and they are allowed to process their feelings. Gregory does need to aknowledge that.
But, Chase, Finn and even precocious Violet need to aknowledge that, in the end, Gregory is the one who gets to set the pace of how he responds to his illness, and how he plans to go about preparing for it. It’s not all about him. But it is mostly about him.
So, Chase, if he doesn’t want to use a cane, he doesn’t have to use a cane. And Finn, if he doesn’t want to see any more specialists, he doesn’t have to see anymore specialists. And Violet, some things just aren’t any of your business. And, yes, you being a child is a part of that. If the adults don’t feel like telling you something — deal.
Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) made some terrible medical choices, and everyone went along with it, as if she were making sense. Gregory is actually making sense. For him. So let’s go along with those, too.
