Carly Spencer just spent nearly two months of General Hospital storyline time in Florida and announced she would be returning to Port Charles a changed woman who had once again examined the mistakes she made as a teenager. She even changed her last name from Carly Corinthos within an hour of being home, but then it seemed Enlightened Carly made a beeline back to Jacksonville the first time Carly Spencer stepped out her front door.
All it took was one moment of seeing Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) and Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros) together at the town Halloween festival for the old Carly to take over for Enlightened Carly. She immediately went right back into angry, defensive mode in which anything she says has to go as she told Sonny he could no longer have Nina around their young daughter, Donna.
Thankfully, Sonny decided not to kowtow to his demanding ex-wife and put a stop to her nonsense right away, telling her that he is going to live his life the way he wants to at this point. He essentially told Carly that her resentment towards Nina had gone on long enough.
Carly didn’t like being told this, but what was she going to do? She can’t stop Sonny from doing what he wants in the same way Sonny can’t stop her from moving on, but the scowl on her face told us this was the same Carly who got on a plane to Aruba and had to make a pit stop in Florida where she allegedly gained a new perspective on life.
Just a little bit later, we watched her in her living room not allowing Jordan Ashford (Tanisha Harper) to get a word in edgewise because she had to talk over her even with Jordan trying to warn Josslyn Jacks (Eden McCoy) and Trina Robinson (Tabyana Ali) that The Hook might come after them. Carly had to dominate the conversation, just as she always has.
Why did GH send Carly to Florida for this grand enlightenment story if she was just going to return and be as ingratiatingly un-self-aware and bitter as she’s always been? If it was to further her forced relationship with Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison), that could have been done anywhere without the promise of a new and improved Carly.
Let’s also not forget that a truly enlightened Carly, who was ready to turn over a new leaf, wouldn’t snarl at Nina while knowingly keeping the fact that Nina had twins from her and that one of those twins is Willow Tait (Katelyn MacMullen). If Carly had decided to tell that tale as soon as she returned, then maybe, just maybe, we could buy that she has changed.
