It’s rare to see a soap couple blissfully in love with no actual problems, but General Hospital has delivered that in Sam McCall and Dante Falconeri. However, Sam and Dante also illustrate the reason that soap couples should never be this happy. It makes them boring.
From day one, it feels like there have been no obstacles on Sam’s (Kelly Monaco) and Dante’s (Dominic Zamprogna) road to love. They fell for each other quickly, declared they were in love before we could blink, and except for Sam’s fear of commitment when Dante suggested they move in with one another, they have had no problems at all.
It seems clear that Drew (Cameron Mathison) was supposed to be Sam and Dante’s obstacle when he first returned from the dead and arrived back in Port Charles, but then Steve Burton refused to get a COVID vaccine and had to be let go, resulting in Jason’s second death. Since Carly (Laura Wright) can’t be without a love interest and Sonny (Maurice Benard) was slated to be with Nina (Cynthia Watros), gears shifted, and Drew became Carly’s love interest.
We learned that Drew accepted Dante and Sam together off-screen, and that was that. Sam and Dante were left without any conflict at all and have not had a real storyline of their own since the Dante/Sam/Drew triangle that lasted about two weeks.
Let us not forget that Dante has an ex-wife in a coma who was in the process of telling him she still loved him when she passed out from a brain injury and hasn’t awoken since. Lulu (last played by Emme Rylan) is still out there in a special hospital, and almost nobody speaks of her or acknowledges her existence.
All GH would have to do to give Sante a storyline they could call their very own is bring back Lulu. If we can keep meeting new characters like Cody (Josh Kelly) and Dex (Evan Hofer), we are sure the soap can find some room in its budget to bring back a legacy character like Luke and Laura’s only daughter. We watched her grow up on-screen, she has two adolescent kids on the canvas, and she could really add some drama to Sam and Dante’s lives now that Drew is lost in the Cult of Carly forever.
So, what do you say, GH? Can Sam and Dante have their own story, pretty please? They are very cute and pretty together, but we’d rather see them go through a soapy mess than the humdrum lives they lead now.
