Since the introduction of Nikolas Cassadine on General Hospital back in 1996, the character has emerged as a pivotal member of the Port Charles community. Originally a tried-and-true good guy, he slowly embraced his darker side, making him a more complex and multidimensional leading man. That’s why General Hospital made a mega mistake killing off the character.
Nikolas Cassadine: Mama’s Boy
Not only is Nikolas (Adam Huss) Laura’s (Genie Francis) eldest son, but he was the only child she had left on the canvas. Lucky’s been living out of the country for years, and the soap’s writers questionably decided to put Lulu (Emme Rylan) in a coma and send her off to a rehab hospital. It’s hard to understand why GH has Francis under contract if none of her children are going to be there; particularly since she’s so proficient in her role as a mother.
General Hospital: Breaking Bad
Nikolas is also a pivotal member of the Cassadine family. His battles with his unscrupulous Uncle Victor (Charles Shaughnessy) have been front and center for the past year. Meanwhile, his contentious father/son dynamic with Spencer (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) had reached an all-time high. The struggles within the Cassadine clan were a riveting part of the show’s drama. With Nikolas gone, a huge chunk of that drama disappears.
GH Rules of Attraction
Then there’s the Nikolas and Ava (Maura West) romance The show spent years building the pair’s relationship against all odds. What started out as a marriage orchestrated by blackmail turned into the real deal and developed into a true love story. Why blow up one of General Hospital’s most successful and complex couplings?
Nikolas Cassadine: Father Figure
Finally, Nikolas was on the cusp of becoming a father again, courtesy of the biggest mistake of his life – having sex with his son’s girlfriend, Esme (Avery Kristen Pohl). And, to top it off, he held the vixen captive for months, something she’s totally forgotten courtesy of amnesia. There’s so much story there to play out on every level, and now it’s all been dropped.
Of course, all of this could be a moot point if Nikolas isn’t really dead. He hasn’t been seen since Ava clobbered him over the head and dragged his lifeless body into the stables on Spoon Island. Maybe he’s just laying low while he recovers and plots his next move. Let’s hope so.
