Forbidden Love: A Case For Sonny And Nina On General Hospital

Forbidden Love: A Case For Sonny And Nina On General HospitalForbidden Love: A Case For Sonny And Nina On General Hospital

General Hospital fans are spewing hate at the coupling of Sonny Corinthos and Nina Reeves. How dare the writers split up the supercouple of Sonny and Carly Corinthos! Never mind Sonny and Carly’s checkered past when it comes to honesty and fidelity. I, for one, am rooting for Sonny and Nina, and here’s why.

General Hospital Exhibit A: His Story

Sonny’s (Maurice Benard) life has never been considered normal. Nor peaceful. Imagine living in a constant state of high alert. Suspicion. Strategy. It can and must be exhausting. Add to that, Sonny is popular with the ladies, Karen Wexler (Cari Shayne), Brenda Barrett (Vanessa Marcil), Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco), Alexis Davis (Nancy Lee Grahn), Olivia Falconeri (Lisa LoCicero), and Ava Jerome (Maura West) to name a few but it was Carly (Laura Wright) who seemed to get “him” the most.

The question is, who is the real Sonny? The mobster whose abusive stepfather shaped the manic depressive kingpin he grew up to be? Or the man who lost his memory and found solace tending bar for two people, Lenny Caulfield (Rif Hutton) and Phyllis Caulfield (Joyce Guy), who took him in and accepted him unconditionally? Who found love in the arms of a beautiful woman who placed no expectations on him? A man whose personal baggage was left on a cliffside, leaving him to be what he was always meant to be?

Exhibit B: Her Story

Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros) can never catch a break. Nina had a father who doted on her but had a mother from hell who drugged her, and stole her babies while she was in a coma. She has suffered the loss of her beloved brother, Nathan West (Ryan Paevey), and her daughter, Nelle Benson (Chloe Lanier), who fell off a cliff, making Nina a perpetual victim. Sure, she has done some despicable things, as a wronged woman on General Hospital. But so has Carly. So has Bobbie Spencer (Jacklyn Zeman). So has Ava. Why does Nina deserve all the hate?

Nina has picked up the pieces of her life and has become a confident, fiery, and successful businesswoman, a loyal and supportive friend, devoted stepmother, and has learned a great deal of empathy through her misdeeds. Is it wrong that she wanted to believe in redemption? Is it wrong for her to hold on to her special bond with “Smike?” Could it be they see in each other who they were always meant to be before life shaped them?

General Hospital’s Sonny And Nina: A Fight For Love

General Hospital’s Sonny and Brenda were the “It” couple of the 90s. Then came Sonny and Carly. But the Sonny that came back from Nixon Falls is a different man and I am willing to see where that leads. The love affair that Sonny and Nina started in Nixon Falls deserves to test its longevity back in Port Charles. Let the two kindle a relationship based on who they are now and not who they used to be. Let Carly find out who she is outside of Sonny’s shadow.

If anyone can pull off a story of redemption and a grand love story it’s General Hospital writers and actors Benard, Watros, and Wright. All the fans have to do is be open to it. Just allow the story to play out as you would a good friend trying to do better. Be better. I wouldn’t wish anyone to be stuck in the same dysfunctional cycle over and over again. Evolve!
